'I get so tired of pink': female chocolatiers turn to death for Valentine's day
Small businesses are putting out death-themed confections on 14 February to poke fun at the day and celebrate its grim roots
For the past five years, the biggest Valentine’s Day seller at Danielle Konya’s bakery Vegan Treats has been a black heart-shaped box of chocolates called “ Fatally Yours .”
This year’s box lid is modeled after an Ouija board. Last year, it featured two skeletons holding hands. Fatally Yours features white chocolate skeletal hands, a big cookie dough skull, speculoos-filled anatomical hearts and other death-themed sweets.

Happy Valentine’s Day From A Very Horny Neural Network
DOOO ME. BONG LOV. TIME 2 WANK.

If you want to stick two fingers up to Valentine’s Day, try Galentine’s instead | Emily Hill
It started as the brainchild of Amy Poehler’s alter ego, but what better way to rebel against the obsession with coupledom than by celebrating the love of our female friends?
For the past five years, I have been single on Valentine’s Day. Manufacturers of age-inappropriate teddy bears and sundry romantic tat attempt to bludgeon me with love hearts until I feel so sad that I go all out to bag some unsuspecting chap and so stand a superior chance of buying stuff next year. But since I still recall how (in the distant days when I had boyfriends) we would (without fail) mark the occasion with a blazing row, I do nothing of the sort. Rather, I buy myself an enormous bunch of flowers, brandish them under the nose of every commuter I come across, and look smug and self-satisfied when one of them finally compliments me on being so adorable and adored.

Facebook Messenger to give couples special status starting on Valentine’s Day
Facebook is changing how couples are connected on its Messenger chat app. From February 14 onward, whenever a couple declares they’re in a relationship, Facebook Messenger will open with a shower of hearts, then invite the couple to customize text color, emoji, and nickname. Your significant other will sit atop your contact list, alongside your most frequently contacted friends or family. The heart eyes emoji will be set as your custom emoji.
To be clear: This isn’t a Valentine’s Day promotion. This is what each couple that says they’re in a relationship will see going forward, a company representative told VentureBeat in an email.
The change in Facebook Messenger will occur each time a couple is declared “In a Relationship,” “Engaged,” “Married,” “In a Civil Union,” “In a Domestic Partnership,” or “In an Open Relationship.”
The change in how couples connect on Facebook Messenger comes one month after Messenger chief David Marcus promised to “massively simplify” the chat app’s user experience .
The choice of as your custom emoji appears to have been made after analysis of 2 billion emojis shared daily with the chat app. As you can see, a list of the most popular emojis around the world includes quite a few hearts.

New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and Mother’s Day are ranked among the most active days for Messenger activity.

Grand Theft Auto Online celebrates Valentine’s Day with a hot ride
Grand Theft Auto Online has introduced a new car, the Vapid Hustler, to help celebrate Valentine’s Day. The multiplayer open-world game is also offering double in-game currency bonuses (GTA$ and RP) in select modes from today until February 19.
Grand Theft Auto Online is the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar Games releases weekly updates for GTA Online with things like new vehicles, clothes, and game modes. Players can use in-game currency to buy new cars and fashions, but they can also boost their in-game wallet with real money. While other single-player games include multiplayer components, GTA Online stands out for giving players access to a connected open-world where they can do as they please or engage in specific activities like races.
Grand Theft Auto V came out back in 2013, but its PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions are still big hits. GTA V was still the third best-selling game in the U.S. in 2017, according to publisher Take-Two . Lifetime sales are now past 90 million copies . The popularity and continued support for GTA Online has helped give the game longevity past its single-player experience.
You can earn double in-game currency from the Till Death Do Us Part, Slasher, Resurrection, Deadline, and Lost vs. Damned game modes.

Facebook Messenger offers new couples old features for Valentine’s Day

Facebook today announced it was bringing Valentine’s Day flair to Messenger for couples who change their relationship status tomorrow. Now, within minutes of making it “FB official”, Messenger will encourage you to customize your “chat with bae.” That squeaking noise you hear? That’s my face cringing so hard the muscles are strained. According to Facebook, new couples will be prompted to choose a custom color for their presumably lovey-dovey chat, along with a custom emoji (in the lower right corner, the default being a thumbs up) and nicknames. Happy Valentine’s Day from Mike Gundy sensually handling a saxophone!
This is everything.
Valentine’s Day is Wednesday, and Oklahoma State football head coach Mike Gundy is here to convince Cowboy fans to buy tickets to the basketball team’s game against Kansas State at 7 p.m. ET. While most couples will be attending a romantic dinner that evening, Gundy wants to play you a little something on the saxophone — also to remind fans that tickets to the game are cheaper than going to a fancy dinner.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Our tickets are cheaper
Than dinner for two!

— Oklahoma State (@OSUAthletics) February 13, 2018
OK, my guess is Gundy isn’t actually playing here, but this is still fantastic. Let’s see it again in GIF form in all its glory:
Gundy has done a nice job of promoting other Oklahoma State sports in the past. One of his more unforgettable ones was when he promoted a Cowboys’ wrestling match last February by wearing a singlet :

For a guy who rocks a mullet 365 days a year , him playing a saxophone to promote a Valentine’s Day basketball game is something we can all appreciate. Whatever your plans are for Wednesday, hopefully they are as magical as Gundy serenading you with a saxophone.

When it comes to choosing the right chocolates for Valentine's Day , the wide selection of choices can be overwhelming. Americans don't have the savings to spend the the money they spend on Valentine's Day. The average American spends over $130 on Valentine's Day each year.  If you're crafty, there's a better way to do Valentine's Day.

Pokemon Go Valentine's Day Event Now Live For A Limited Time
Valentine's Day is nearly upon us, and a lot of video games are celebrating the holiday by holding special Valentine's Day-themed events for a limited time. That includes Pokemon Go , which has now kicked off its own Valentine's event, giving players a chance to capture some very rare pink Pokemon and earn extra bonuses.
From now until February 15, Pokemon Go players will encounter increased spawns of the heart-shaped Pokemon Luvdisc, one of the many Gen 3 Pokemon that were recently added to Pokemon Go. Chansey will also appear more frequently for the duration of the event. Players will be rewarded with triple the usual amount of Stardust for each Luvdisc and Chansey that they catch.
Valentine's Day also marks the end of Kyogre 's run as a Raid Boss, making this your last opportunity to capture the Legendary Pokemon. Another Gen 3 Legendary, Rayquaza , is also available right now in Pokemon Go; the Dragon-type will appear in Raid Battles until March 16. Rayquaza arrived alongside another batch of Gen 3 monsters, which primarily consisted of Flying- and Dragon-types such as Altaria, Salamence, and Tropius.
Beyond the Valentine's Day event, players also have the next Pokemon Go Community Day event to look forward to this month. That event takes place on February 24. Like the first Community Day in January , players will have a chance to capture a rare Pokemon that knows a move it cannot typically use during the event. Niantic hasn't revealed what that exclusive move is yet, but the Pokemon in question this time is the Dragon-type Dratini.

Facebook Messenger is getting a surprising new Valentine's Day update
Ten years ago, the pressure my fellow teens and I felt to make a budding relationship "Facebook Official" was real. But with fewer teenagers than ever using Facebook ( in favor of Snapchat ), and with us now-twenty-somethings living our lives on Instagram , the stress-inducing relationship status feature has become blissfully irrelevant.
Now, Facebook might be trying to reverse that trend — using Valentine's Day as its weapon.

‘One drink became five’: Ad agency couples tell their stories on Valentine’s Day
Agencies are rethinking dating policies , but the industry is rife with couples who found love at work. In honor of Valentine’s Day, here are the stories of five couples.
PMG’s Mari Diaz and Martin Rudler
Courtesy of Mari Diaz and Martin Rudler
Mari Diaz, an account lead at PMG, and Martin Rudler, a senior account manager at the Fort Worth, Texas, agency, worried about dating as colleagues. But that didn’t stop them, thanks naturally to an agency trip to a Miley Cyrus concert.
“The romance of that entertainer and concert was too much for us,” Rudler joked.
“We first bonded over the fact that we were both ambitious,” he said. “That’s how I showed my charm to her.”
They still tried to keep their relationship a secret from the rest of their office, but that didn’t last long. They eventually moved to Austin, Texas, where they launched a PMG office from their apartment. Today, the office they run has more than 20 employees. There are days the couple won’t even see each other at work, but when they do, Diaz said they are good keeping their relationship at home.
Still, Rudler said, “When the day becomes a little overwhelming, it’s nice to pull her aside and talk to her about whatever is going on.”
Leo Burnett Chicago’s Luis and Trisha Marques (and little Luca)
Courtesy of Luis and Trisha Marques
Luis and Trisha Marques first met when both were working at Crispin in Boulder, Colorado, in 2012. Luis was on a work visa from Madeira Island and an intern, while Trisha was working as an account supervisor. They began dating after long hours of working on product design for the same client project.
“At Crispin, it was like everyone dated each other,” said Trisha. “It’s a small town, and everyone there is a transplant, so everyone hangs out together and the agency becomes your family. A lot of relationships bud from that.”
Then Luis’ visa expired, and he had to return to Europe. The couple began a long-distance relationship. Eleven months later, Leo Burnett Chicago hired him. Trisha also got a job at Leo Burnett and began work as an account director a week after Luis began his job. “She was jealous I got a job at Leo Burnett,” said Luis. “She had always wanted to work there, so I told her she should apply.”
Today, they are married in Chicago with a 1-year-old boy named Luca, a true product of agency love.

Emily Emerick, Rain’s vp of operations, and Andy Sheffield, freelance creative director and photographer, first met in the spring of 2014 when he came to Rain to do freelance work for the digital consultancy. Three years later, Emerick and Sheffield are still dating and working with each other.
It wasn’t until Sheffield moved into Emerick’s neighborhood in Brooklyn that the two got together outside of work. “I was like, we should get drinks after work some Friday,” said Emerick. “One drink became five, and we ended up talking all night.”
The secret romance didn’t stay secret for long.
“I don’t think anyone believed that she was just waiting around for her neighbor to come to work,” Sheffield said.
Emerick said it’s refreshing to date someone in the same industry who understands the long hours. She and Sheffield don’t always leave their work at the front door. They’ve been working on a photography art project together for the past year.
“We definitely have a foundation of making things together,” said Emerick, “so there’s not this separation of ‘OK, we’re home; we’re not talking about work anymore.'”

Not all couples who meet at the same agency stay at the same agency. Christine Watts, Wunderman director of business development for North America, is married to Ben Peppernell, senior copywriter at R/GA. But what relationship doesn’t need some healthy competition? The couple first met while they were working for Wunderman in 2011 in Sydney, Australia.
“I noticed him on the basketball team and liked his nice arms,” Watts said. “He was too nervous to talk to me, so pretty much ignored me.”
“I was not nervous,” Peppernell contested. “I was just really throwing myself into the game.”
In 2014, the couple moved to New York, and Peppernell started to work at R/GA. “Just like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, we’re pretty tight-lipped about any confidential work stuff,” said Peppernell. Since they have very different jobs, Watts said they are only competitive about who works at the better agency.
“If we were both creative, I’m not sure how we would live together under the one roof,” added Peppernell. “I’d keep my ideas notebook in a locked safe. But luckily, we’re not.”
Peppernell and Watts got married last June. Work tends to melt into their everyday lives, but when they get the chance, they enjoy going to brunch, traveling and fostering rescued animals.

RG Lacandola, associate creative director at EP+Co., and Jillian Cornette, content producer at EP+Co., first met at Deutsch in 2011 when Cornette was a producer and RG was an art director. They were friends for two years before their relationship blossomed into a romance over cheese tots one night at Crif Dogs in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
“I remember when we started dating, we didn’t tell anyone at Deutsch, so people would vent about the other person to one of us, and we’d laugh and compare notes at the end of the day,” said Lacandola. “When people finally figured it out, I noticed people watching what they said.”
Cornette said there are a lot of perks to working with Lacandola. “You always have someone to commute with, an awesome lunch buddy and someone to bounce ideas off no matter what time it is,” she said. “Plus, you both know everyone at work, so you don’t have to constantly explain who your co-workers are. ‘Remember Bob from media?’”

A Mom’s Valentine’s Day Message to Her Son, and LGBTQ Kids Everywhere
Debbie Munn
I have fond memories of sitting around the kitchen table with my sons the night before their school parties. I remember watching them pick out their favorite Valentine’s Day cards, the teasing and, most of all, the laughter we shared. It was their first attempts of showing innocent affection to their peers.
So many years have passed. Now my sons have families of their own, and are keeping our Valentine’s traditions alive as their families select those special cards.
On this Valentine’s Day, I want to say to my oldest son Charlie, and to others in the LGBTQ community: You are loved. You deserve to receive and give love like anyone else. And you deserve to not live in fear of discrimination.

Red wines for Valentine’s Day | Fiona Beckett on wine
Let’s ditch the bubbles and rosé this Valentine’s Day ...
I sometimes think we’re led by what supermarkets think we ought to drink, rather than by what we actually fancy. For Valentine’s Day, for example, that more often than not means anything pink and preferably fizzy, champagne being the obvious choice. But is that what you or your loved one really wants?
Recent research shows that consumers regard red wine as the most relaxing drink , but despite red being as legitimate a Valentine’s colour as pink, red is rarely seen as a romantic choice, with the exception of rather half-hearted injunctions to buy Saint-Amour , one of the least interesting of the Beaujolais crus.

This Valentine's day, time to let go of manufactured desire | Steven W Thrasher
Stories about love are political, and like the myth of the American dream, the political stories Valentine’s Day peddles can limit expression
Perhaps the major lesson of my peripatetic life has been learning to let go of desire –desire for sex, for romance, for a normative family, for economic security, for consistent housing , for what was once called a “job” in the United States, or for any particular outcome in life. Like most of us, I have been taught to long for many things I likely will never have and may not even really want (which can alienate me from the many blessings of my life).
Valentine’s Day is a good occasion to reflect not just on how holidays set us up for disappointment by manufacturing desires for particular outcomes, but also to consider two of the worst effects of desire itself: entitlement and sadness. Continue reading...

Married Figure Skaters Alexa Scimeca and Chris Knierim Take Valentine’s Day to the Limit

It’s Valentine’s Day so perhaps it should come as no surprise that a real-life figure skating couple coasted onto the 2018 Winter Olympics rink to turn it into their own little love fest.
After helping the U.S. team secure bronze, married partners in life and ice Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim delivered a spotty short program that earned them a 65.55 score in Wednesday’s Olympic pairs competition, enough to get them to the final.
But there’s nothing the internet loves more than love , whether it’s fan fiction or the real deal. After all, why watch the Olympics for the triumph of the human spirit, when you can just tune in for the romance factor? And boy did Alexa and Chris deliver. They’re the first married couple to compete for the U.S. in pairs skating at the games since 1988, and they even sealed their performance with a kiss.
There was that. But there was also the fact that they competed on Wednesday, which is Valentine’s Day in Gangneung, South Korea, and Chris, 30, came prepared.
Chris gave Alexa, 26, a handmade heart-shaped crimson Valentine that read “will you be mine.”
There’s more. Before that, they treated everyone to a selfie of their kiss on the ice. Seriously, these two.
“We’ll get there someday,” Alexa told reporters about their skate . “This journey is really between Chris and I. it’s not about our score and it’s not about the other teams being better than us. It’s deeper than that. It’s our joy and love for skating.”
Joy and love indeed.

VR on Valentine’s Day: The technological evolution of love, connection, and intimacy
GUEST:
Connection is difficult. With more distractions, demands on our time, and mediated communications like texting and social media, making time for intimacy and love can be challenging. Holidays such as Valentine’s Day can serve to reinforce this realization, further isolating singles and those who choose alternative lifestyles. There are some who feel technology is an obstacle to intimacy and love, but other experts believe virtual reality can actually help foster connecting in new and exciting ways.
“Absolutely. Virtual reality can help bring us closer together and foster love and intimacy,” said Dr. Holly Richmond, a Ph.D Sex Therapist and author of the soon to be published Next Sex: Mating, relating and masturbating in the new age of technology. Richmond sees VR and other emerging technologies as having immense potential to help break down the barriers to love and intimacy in the digital age.
According to Richmond there are several applications where VR can play a role in healthier relationships and closer connections. VR therapies are already being used successfully to treat disorders such as PTSD and common phobias, Richmond believes this treatment can extend to sexual health issues such as erectile dysfunction, low libido and performance anxiety. “VR therapy can help common disorders — pain disorders, low libido, and erectile dysfunction. By helping people understand arousal and taking the pathology out of ‘not doing it right,’ VR can provide positive solutions in a safe and comfortable environment.” Richmond is currently exploring using immersive VR environments to help treat these common issues among her patients.
She also believes there would be huge value in using VR to help teach anatomy and human sexuality in schools. Using a 3D model to explore female and male anatomy would enable students to better understand their own bodies and the bodies of potential partners. Immersive VR educational videos would also act as great tool to help explore human sexuality in a safe and nurturing environment.
Why VR?
Beyond therapy and education, Richmond also believes VR has the power to help normalize sexual expression and empower users to better understand and meet their own needs. In her practice, she outlines three elements that are vital for healthy, intimate connections. These “Three E’s” are Empathy, Empowerment, and Embodiment. VR’s immersive elements, such as having a first-person point of view (POV), enable the user to experience and feel these elements instead of just talking about them.

“VR is great place to learn and practice. It gives users an experiential component. Better than just watching, we can feel our way into things. It also gives us choice — choosing your POV, for example — gives us more control and can be very empowering. VR also allows for a mind and body connection. We can actually feel it — it’s an integrated experience. Used in education, learning outcomes are dramatically improved when someone can experience something instead of just watching.”
The love-tech landscape
Above: Holly Richmond on the set of Badoink’s “Virtual Sexology” series.
Individuals and couples can now use a few immersive tools to help enhance intimacy. VR films, primarily focused in the adult entertainment sector, are beginning to take more of an educational approach. For example, Badoink’s “Virtual Sexology” series, which Richmond co-authors, is positioned as a sex therapy program. It primarily consists of 360 degree videos shot from the first-person perspective. The viewer can choose man or woman’s POV, and the scene immerses them as a participant. The voice-over includes tactics like sensate focus and applied behavior applications such as positive reinforcement. While this type of immersion may be a step above traditional 2D video, it still doesn’t enable the viewer to feel what’s happening on film.
Enter Kiiroo , a growing tech company based in Amsterdam. It’s developing a solution to this problem.
Kiiroo is the leading producer of remote-controlled smart teledildonics for couples. Since 2013, this company has used technology to help couples feel more connected and intimate when they’re not together — especially when they are hundreds if miles apart. Through the use of the Kiiroo app and the devices, both male and female, couples can have an interactive experience, controlling each other’s pleasure, despite being a continent away. Couples can see each other in real-time via a 2D webcam or other similar device (like a smartphone), but according to Kiiroo’s Maurice Op de Beek, couples can now use a 360 degree camera and enjoy the VR version. “VR is so real and immersive, but historically, you couldn’t feel it. You needed touch. We have created the illusion of touch and are solving this problem.”
Above: Kiroo’s Fleshlight Launch and Onyx 2
Op de Beek is extremely optimistic about the potential of creating more and more realistic experiences with the help of VR. When asked if we would see hyper-real sexual experiences in our lifetime, his immediate response was “Definitely! We already have this with our Launch device. It’s very real and the developments are going so fast we are about 10-20 year out from hyper-real simulated sexual experiences.” Kiiroo’s most immersive product, the Fleshlight Launch , enables male stimulation synchronized with a VR film experience. The device exactly mimics the actions onscreen, reeling the viewer into the action and providing for a new level of embodiment. The market has about 1,500 VR-enabled films that are synced to devices, with more in production.
Above: Kiiroo Chief Technology Officer Maurice Op de Beek, believes we will experience hyper-real immersive encounters in our lifetime.
Kiiroo is also enabling devices for women to sync with VR films, partnering with WeVibe and OhMiBod . Op de Beek has approached many of the leading device manufacturers and proposed adding Kiiroo’s smart technology to their products. Eventually there will be hundreds of thousands of these smart devices all over the globe, allowing for couples and singles to remotely connect like never before.
Richmond feels leveraging the immersion of VR can be a valuable tool for these devices: “The newest VR-enabled, remote control devices are some of the best that I’ve seen. They force couples to communicate, taking some of the guess work out of meeting each other’s needs. It has facilitated conversations about what people like and what they don’t like. Sex tech can help women be empowered and connect with their own bodies and then share this with a partner.”
On addiction
Given the reality of achieving hyper-real sexual experiences in our lifetime, some fear that these experiences will be addicting and act as a replacement for real, human interactions. Headlines such as this one from a recent ABC post , “Virtual reality addiction threat prompts cautious approach as VR nears ‘smartphone-like’ take-off,” work to propagate these concerns. Richmond doesn’t believe VR will increase addiction and argues that technology is only working to enhance human connection, not replace it.
“The idea of addiction — I just don’t buy it. There’s no such thing as sex or Internet addiction. There will always be people who abuse technology. The VR component won’t make it that much more addictive. From print magazines like Playboy, to online adult entertainment, and now VR and teledildonics — the technology will keep progressing. We, as human beings, need to learn how to keep up with it.”
The future is bright
Both Op de Beek and Richmond are extremely optimistic about what the future holds for VR and making a love connection. As technology improves, so will the ways we leverage this technology to learn more about ourselves and our partners. VR is creating new communication channels, new ways to feel and empathize with one another and ultimately allow for a full range of intimate self-expression. Richmond sums it up: “My mission in life is to stop the pathologization of any kind of sexual expression that isn’t within the ‘normal’ box. And thankfully, that box is opening — we’ve got pansexual, demi-sexual, bisexual, and now digisexual.
“We’ve still got this inherent desire, especially in the US, to pathologize difference. Immersive technology, like VR, can enable us to embrace, even celebrate, these differences, and allow us to safely explore and experience ourselves in new ways. This is what I see as the biggest potential for VR.”
Lisa Peyton is an immersive media strategist and media psychologist focusing on the business applications of new technologies.

One Man Expertly Combined the Winter Olympics and Valentine’s Day Into the Most Hilarious Memes

One man just got very meta about Valentine’s Day and Winter Olympics with a perfectly executed series of memes .
There are probably few days when the world’s attention is split between something as captivating as the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games and as polarizing Valentine’s day. Both events touch us all, and one Press Association reporter, Edd Dracott, discovered that the action-packed photos from the Winter Olympics say everything we can’t about the range of emotions one experiences during Valentine’s Day.
“#ValentinesDay and #Pyeonchang2018 only crossover once, so it would inexcusably rude not to take some of the finest Winter Olympics @PAImages and trivialise them into ham-fisted memes. Let’s do this,” he wrote Wednesday.
Some meme makers just caption one picture, but blessedly, this savvy guy really went the distance. Clearly these pictures were made to communicate what it means to be seeking a Valentine.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s Platonic Relationship Can’t Stop the Internet From Celebrating Valentine’s Day on Their Behalf

If this year’s Winter Olympics in PyeongChang have taught us anything so far, it might be what love looks like.
Well, the platonic love between longtime ice dancing partners Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada, anyway. The gold medal pair won the internet’s heart this year with a ravishing dance in the team competition to a dramatic medley from the Moulin Rouge movie, demonstrating serious chemistry. (For longtime followers of their career, their palpable connection is no surprise.) So their fans — new and old — can’t help but wish them the very best on this Valentine’s Day as they’re together across the world in PyeongChang, even though they’ve regularly dispelled relationship rumors over their two decades as skating partners. The internet wants what it wants, and in this case, it’s to celebrate true love on ice. Maybe, as one Twitter admirer noted, “love is simply friendship set on fire.”
Virtue and Moir probably have more important things on their minds than Valentines, though: the ice dancing short programs and medal finals are still ahead on Feb. 18 and 19.

Love is in the air at Winter Games for Valentine’s Day athletes
Valentine’s Day will be particularly memorable for those couples competing in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang
It was a Valentine’s Day to remember for a select band of athletes in Pyeongchang – not many people get to spend the most romantic day of the year competing alongside their partner at the Winter Olympics.
That was the case, though, for the married figure skaters Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim, who were taking part in the pairs short program. They had already given a public display of their affection when winning a bronze medal on Monday.

6 Body Scrubs for Valentine’s Day
Happy Valentine’s Day, loves!
I’m currently soaking up all the newborn love, but no matter who you’re spending the holiday with, there should be some element of self love, in my opinion. One of my favorite ways to self indulge is by taking a long bath. A little Bon Iver (which is actually what I delivered to), candles lit, and a couple ahhhmazing bath products, and I’m happy. If you’re looking to up the love for yourself today, consider one of my favorite bath scrubs. Below is a list of scrubs created by yours truly – many which are DIY and a breeze.
DIY Peppermint Body Scrub
Nourishing Body Scrub
DIY Coffee Scrub
Sugar & Spice Body Scrub

After All These Years, a Valentine’s Day for Myself
Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast
I counted the sunrises. It was Dec. 2, 2012, and if my math is correct, I had been in a relationship, for better or for worse, for 9,634 days—or just about every day of my adult life.
I walked away that Sunday morning. There had been too many tears that last night together, too much shouting, too much of everything bad and too little of anything good and worth holding on to.
I was raised to believe that my self-worth was inextricably tied to whether someone else found me good enough to make house with and, until a few years ago, I suppose I believed that.

'Black Mirror' made the Season 4 dating app just in time for Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is a great day to revel in a relationship, but a better day to embrace the existential dread or spiral into doubt about whether love even exists! Netflix and Black Mirror have you covered there with the actual invention of Coach, the Season 4 dating app that tells people exactly how long their relationships will last.
In "Hang the D.J.," Amy (Georgina Campbell) and Frank (Joe Cole) use Coach and are among a society full of people who put blind faith in "the system" to match people with their soulmates. At first, Frank and Amy get 12 hours together, but a second chance proves to be longer and more complicated due to how they approach the System and its power over when relationships end. Read more...

Michelle Obama’s Valentine’s Day Playlist for Barack Is Absolutely Essential Listening

Just two days after serving all the couple goals at the unveiling of their new portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, Barack and Michelle Obama are making supporters swoon over their relationship even more.
In honor of Valentine’s Day, Michelle took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a romantic Spotify playlist she curated to celebrate her 25-year marriage with the former president of the United States. “Happy #ValentinesDay to my one and only, @BarackObama ,” she wrote. “To celebrate the occasion, I’m dedicating a little Valentine’s Day playlist to you!”
Dubbed “Forever Mine,” the 44-song playlist is jam-packed with romantic ballads such as “All of Me” by John Legend, “At Last” by Etta James and “Something In The Way She Moves” by James Taylor, as well as some more upbeat tracks like Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
Not to be outdone, Barack paid tribute to their love with an adorable—and picturesque—photo of the pair posing in the countryside with their arms around each other. “Happy Valentine’s Day, @MichelleObama ,” he tweeted. “You make every day and every place better.”

Dairy Queen just dropped a new Blizzard and heart-shaped ice cream cake for Valentine's Day
Win McNamee/Getty Images
Dairy Queen has partnered with Ghirardelli chocolate  to launch two new decadent desserts for Valentine's Day.   The Dipped Strawberry Blizzard is a fusion of vanilla soft serve , Ghirardelli chocolate, and real strawberry topping.  The second dessert is a mini, heart-shaped Dipped Strawberry Cupid Cake, which features vanilla ice cream, chocolate chunks, and a strawberry topping.  The Cupid Cake can be purchased for $9.99 at participating locations, or it can be ordered online.

Growing up, Dairy Queen was the spot. My family and I would hit it up post-softball games and dance recitals, after a long day at the beach, or for a quick afternoon treat. As kids, my parents would even take us through the drive through after dinner in our pajamas, officially calling it "PJ rolling." So yes, I have a love for DQ, and I will show it on Valentine's Day by  eating all the blizzards.
Lucky for me (and you), Dairy Queen is launching two new desserts in collaboration with  Ghirardelli  to celebrate the holiday. Both desserts include chunks of the famous chocolate, and taste preeeeetty similar to a chocolate covered strawberry.  See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Here's what your favorite Valentine's Day chocolate says about your relationship status
Lionel Allorge/Wikimedia Commons
Your choice in candy can say not only a lot about your personality , but also your relationship status. Godiva lovers are most likely in a steady relationship, while those having trouble defining theirs are probably drawn to M&Ms.  "Netflix and chill" sessions are defined by drugstore chocolates , since you don't have to pay more than a $1 to get your sweet fix.
As Valentine's Day is finally here (Y-I-K-E-S), we begin to wonder how we are going to be celebrating this over-the-top, grossly romantic holiday honoring Saint Valentine himself. Did you have a " Galentine's Day " or a nice romantic dinner with a special someone?
One thing we can all agree on is that no matter what type of relationship you're in, you're going to be consuming mounds of mounds of chocolate. What differs from person to person, though, is what kind of chocolate they are eating. I don't know about you, but I've always wondered what the chocolate you exchange says about the relationship you are in. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Norway’s Curling Team Takes Valentine’s Day So Seriously They Put on Their Fanciest Pants

Norway may not have a reputation as a fashion capital. But that all changes during the Winter Olympics , when the Norwegian curling team pulls out its fanciest pants — literally. And for Valentine’s Day this year, the athletes on Norway’s men’s curling team in PyeongChang did not disappoint, festooning their lower halves in bubblegum-pink attire bedecked with festive hearts. A love for holiday-specific attire is certainly alive on the ice for this team.
The Norwegian delegation of Christoffer Svae, Torger Nergard, Thomas Ulsrud and Havard Vad Petersson have a tradition of wearing eye-catching patterned pants for their Olympic appearances as they compete in the most under-appreciated sport at the Games. It started back in Vancouver in 2010, where they took home the silver medal, and continued in Sochi in 2014, although no fashion choices could boost them onto the medal podium back then.
Although they have special red, white, and blue designs created for them to match the colors of their flag for PyeongChang, they chose to work with the Valentine’s Day holiday and bust out these hot pink trousers for this week’s first round of play, which clash brilliantly with their red shirts. Unfortunately they did not turn out to be lucky pants, as the team lost 6-4 to Japan in their first Round Robin session at the Gangneung Curling Centre.
They’ll continue their medal quest — with more memorable pants in store, one hopes — against Canada on Thursday .

Crappy Valentine’s Day, Robots: AI Is Terrible at (Human) Seduction
Ah, yes, the 14th Day of February, on which you’re maybe anticipating some sweet words from that special someone, or feeling forever alone, or just went and rejected the Hallmark holiday altogether. No matter your feelings about the holiday, we’ve found you a Valentine for the day to tell you the sweet nothings no one else will:
“YAK O WAY.”
Mmm, sultry. Now imagine it carved into one of those candy hearts. Boom, right? Except not.
That probably (hopefully?) isn’t quite up to your standard for heart-meltingly hot. And that’s probably because it was written by an AI , which, it turns out, hasn’t quite mastered the art of (human) seduction.
A woman named Janelle Shane created the candy-heart-generating AI. By day, Shane is a laser scientist, but her hobby is to train neural networks. And she purposely trains them to do silly things, and to be, well, kind of bad at them. Her previous neural networks have invented names for new residents of the Star Wars universe and for paint colors . One even wrote Harry Potter fan fiction .
To create her candy heart AI, Shane collected as many genuine candy heart messages as she could find and fed them into a neural network. The algorithm detected patterns in the data and then used those patterns to create messages that imitated the genuine ones.
Granted, the system’s far from perfect. But it does give us a little perspective on just how strange we are as we try to woo one another.
“I would say that [watching them go off the rails] is one of the greatest pleasures of training neural networks. It may be frustrating at times, if you’re trying to get something done. But I love it when things like that happen,” Shane said in an interview with Slate . “It is satisfying in the sense that you’re seeing computers aren’t good at everything yet.”
Yes, the neural network came up with a couple of messages that are almost cute in the right light. The simplicity of “MY MY” has an old-timey charm, and “YOU ARE IT” hits some of the right notes.
Other attempts stray from the affectionate into the simply strange.
A few messages channel the opening of a disappointing Tinder exchange , such as “HOW U HOT” or “YOU ARE BABE” or the more straightforward “HOLE.” From there, they range from the perplexing — “LET’S RIND” and “LOVE 2000 HOGS YEA” — to the possibly derogatory: “MY HAG” and “YOU RANK.”
Would-be lovers might find themselves mired in rage over romance, or, if you’re nasty like that, not nearly hot enough. To that end, if the AI hasn’t spat out a candy heart message to your liking, there are more to choose from; you can request access to those that include four-letter words that aren’t spelled L-O-V-E.
If there’s one thing this experiment shows, it’s that robots still can’t do everything we can. The writers currently employed to compose messages for candy hearts can consider their jobs automation-proof, at least for now—or until the next generation of young people actually find some success with “HOW U HOT.” Which, come to think of it, is only just a few letters shy of “U UP?”
Honestly? Yeah. They should probably be worried.

Valentine's Day may mean heart-shaped chocolates, roses, and fancy dinners for mere mortals. But for Olympians, the competition takes priority over the traditional celebrations.

Fortnite Valentine's Day Update And Event Delayed Until After Valentine's Day
Fortnite developer Epic Games announced recently that it would launch a Valentine's Day event for its Save the World mode alongside a new update for PS4 , Xbox One , and PC . Previously, Epic had delayed released of the patch until today --and now it has pushed it back again, meaning that the Valentine's Day event will begin after the holiday.
On Reddit today, Epic announced that players will have to wait another day for update 2.5.0. As a result, Save the World won't have a Valentine's Day makeover until tomorrow, if the schedule remains as announced.
"Our v.2.5.0 update will release tomorrow; we apologize for the poor communication around this release and the delay of the patch," Community Coordinator Sean Hamilton wrote. "When we have more info on when the update will land, we'll drop those details."
Hamilton also explained how its plans to reset Seasonal Gold has changed in the wake of the delay. Previously, Epic had announced that it would wipe players' Gold with the release of 2.5.0. But now that the patch has been pushed back, this process has been thrown into disarray.
"Our initial plan was to reset Seasonal Gold in v2.5.0, which may have caused you to lose leftover gold," he explained. "To try and avoid that, we adjusted to convert the leftover Gold to Firecracker Tickets. Due to the delay in the build, there is nothing in the event store and Storm Llamas have disappeared. We did a poor job communicating this and did not create a good experience for you."
He continued, "Future gold resets will be on specific dates, following the Spring it on Event, and we will communicate that information to you in advance. For now, Seasonal Gold will be converted to Firecracker Tickets. We'll be adding a random Blue Schematic to the store, for you to spend any leftover Seasonal Gold you have."
The update adds some new content, including a Valentine's Day-themed questline, heroes, and the Cupid's Crossbow weapon. In addition, it brings a "reactive" quest type and an option to increase the Save the World mode's difficulty.
