Hypegram : 10 female-founded startups to support for International Women’s Day ARTICLE 142933772 10 female-founded startups to support for International Women’s Day english ARTICLE

Today is International Women's Day (IWD), a day to both celebrate the social, economic, political, and cultural achievements of women and continue the push towards women's equality. In the business world, women are founding companies at record rates. , their businesses employ over eight million workers and generate over $1.4 trillion in revenue.

They still only comprise 36% of the country's businesses and there's a lot of progress to be made (in fact, this year's IWD theme is #PressforProgress). However, as part of a team that has its finger on the pulse of up-and-coming consumer brands, I have to say we're certainly witnessing a wave of female entrepreneurship that provides inspiration and hope for the road ahead.

These female-founded startups should always be on your radar for the innovative products and services they offer, but especially today on IWD as many of these brands are putting forth powerful initiatives and campaigns to empower and support other women.

ThirdLove/Instagram

Bra company ThirdLove offers a Try Before Buying program that lets customers try out bras for 30 days. When these gently-worn bras are returned, they're hand-sorted and then donated. Since 2013, ThirdLove has donated over $3.5 million worth of bras to women’s charities. In the last year alone, it donated over $500,000 worth of bras to more than 20 women’s charities, including donations to the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, as well as the Northern California wildfires.

Mejuri

The fine jewelry brand is revolutionizing the industry by keeping costs low and encouraging women to buy jewelry for themselves instead of waiting for someone else to buy it for them — and they are finding success, with a repeat purchase rate of 25%. Mejuri says that 87% of its community members are women, and if they’re not gifting themselves, they’re overwhelmingly gifting other women.

Universal Standard

Plus-size inclusive fashion brand Universal Standard has a unique policy that reduces the anxiety of shopping: its Universal Fit Liberty (UFL) allows shoppers to exchange pieces from its core collection if their size fluctuates within a year of purchase. All gently worn clothing returned through UFL will be laundered and donated to charities like Dress for Success and First Steps that support women trying to return to the workforce.

It's International Women's Day — here are 35 quotes from the strongest feminist voices around the world
March 8 is International Women's Day.
The earliest celebration of International Women's Day was in 1909. That year, the Socialist Party of America dedicated the day to honoring the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York. Through the years, the day has been spent showing the progress that women have made as well as the progress women (and men) around the world are working towards.
This year, the day's theme is #PressforProgress , a call-to-action for everyone to "press forward and progress gender parity." International Women's Day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. The International Women's Day site says the theme is "a strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive." With the momentum of women's equality movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, a day to recognize women everywhere is more crucial than ever.
In support of International Women's Day we've rounded up some of the most poignant quotes from some of the most well-known supporters of the gender equality movement:

Hillary Clinton: former Secretary of State, former New York Senator and 2016 Democratic nominee for President of the United States Shayanne Gal/Business Insider
Emma Watson: actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Shayanne Gal/Business Insider

Serena Williams announces her return to tennis will be on International Women’s Day
YES!
Serena Williams was always firm in her plan to return to tennis after the birth of her daughter Alexis, but now that plan is in action. On Wednesday Williams posted a photo on Instagram outlining her next steps, which includes a return on International Women’s Day.
A post shared by Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) on Mar 7, 2018 at 7:16am PST
“It’s official. My comeback is here. This Thursday I will start playing tennis again professionally for the first time since giving birth to my daughter. This whole month I am playing tournaments in California and Florida- both my home states. Thursday, the day I play my very first match, marks international women’s day. My comeback could not have come on a better day and I decided I wanted to do something different let you all be apart of my long journey back.”
Williams’ last tournament was the 2017 Australian Open, which took place just after finding out she was pregnant. The return now means Serena will have some time to get back to speed in minor tournaments before Wimbledon in June.
Williams was the world No.1, but is currently unranked after taking a break. Her ranking was protected, meaning she can still use it to gain entry into majors — but it’s unlikely she would be seeded at Wimbledon due to the time off.

This year, let’s make International Women’s Day really count | Letters
Paula James and Alison Penn say women have been robbed of a secure retirement, Sue Ferns says joining a union is a woman’s best route to fighting for gender equality, and Anne Quesney agrees that ‘catcalling’ should be made a hate crime
The mainstream media is celebrating the centenary of women’s partial suffrage, granted in 1918. No doubt there will be limited coverage of International Women’s Day on Thursday 8 March. And yet women continue to suffer the harsh effects of needless austerity, as they are still the main managers and carers of their own and others’ families. We face exploitation as paid workers and discrimination as women across the board.
Both injustices are embedded in a patriarchal system which only concedes equal pay and opportunity when and where it maximises profit. This is the market economy. The global recession has hit women hard and they face a double whammy as producers and reproducers. Sexual harassment and violent assault come with the territory. However, we are strong in the struggle, as the current strike over university pensions demonstrates. Women are on the picket lines of the University and College Union (UCU), protesting against changes proposed by the managers of the university superannuation scheme, which will substantially reduce our pensions by putting them at the mercy of the market. The excuse is a deficit which clearly does not exist except in the minds of dystopian future fantasists.

Gorgeous photos show how people are celebrating International Women's Day around the world
AP Photo/Steven Senne
March 8 is International Women's Day , a date dedicated to pursuing equal rights for women from Calcutta to Connecticut.
Scholars believe the first Women's Day was celebrated more than 109 years ago in New York, but recently it's become more popular in other cities and countries around the world. Whereas the day often passes somewhat uneventfully in much of the US, women in other places rush into the streets to celebrate, strike, lobby for equal rights, and share the day with their sisters in suffrage.
This year's festivities include an Indian fashion show dedicated to outlawing acid, an all-women's bowling league celebrating their first game in Afghanistan, and a few female bakers staring down President Putin in Russia.
Check out some of the coolest things that are happening around the world for International Women's Day this year:

McDonalds flipped its golden arches for International Women's Day and received a torrent of Twitter burns
The Quarter Pounder would like women to know he cares.
To celebrate International Women's Day, McDonalds decided to offer paid maternity leave flip their brand logo upside down, turning the infamous "M" into a "W." The "W" stands for women.
It's what Susan B. Anthony always dreamed of <3
SEE ALSO: How Medieval Times got a queen before America got a female president
The "M" "W" connection has long been a source of confusion for many in the Scrabble/Bananagrams community. But this action has many accusing the brand of performing yet another empty PR stunt.
“If McDonald’s wants to empower women, it should start by protecting the women who cook and sell the company’s food every day while facing sexual harassment and discrimination on the job," Alexis Harris, a McDonalds worker from Riverview Florida said in a public statement. "That’s why we’re fighting not just for $15 an hour, but for the right to a union so women can demand real protections and respect from McDonald’s – not just a cheap PR stunt." Read more...

Free PS4 Theme Now Available For International Women's Day
Sony has released a free PlayStation 4 theme to celebrate International Women's Day . The background features original artwork from Media Molecule artist Maja-Lisa Kehlet, who is currently at work on Dreams . The art features the leading women from several PlayStation exclusives: Chloe and Nadine from Uncharted , Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn , Kara from Detroit: Become Human , Ellie from The Last of Us , and a pink bear-like creature from Dreams.
The bad news for Americans is this theme appears to be a UK-exclusive. If you're in the right region, you can grab it from the PlayStation Store . Still, for those of us who aren't, it's a nice piece of artwork paying respects to the holiday.
On top of that, PlayStation Europe also put out a video celebrating women's contributions to their company and various first-party studios. Watch below to see some of the women who are involved in every aspect of PlayStation games, from art and sound design to programming and community management.

Back when I was on OkCupid, I live by a single rule: anyone who mentioned 'Ayn Rand' in their profile would be immediately removed from consideration.

Oxford University Is Sorry for That Photo of a Woman Scrubbing ‘International Women’s Day’ Away

Oxford has apologized after a photo of a female cleaner scrubbing the words “Happy International Women’s Day” off the University’s steps went viral.
The shot shows the female worker using a mop to clear away the chalk message as a group of male security guards stand idly by. It was captured and shared on Twitter on Thursday by Associate Professor Dr. Sophie Smith, who pointed out the irony of the image.
“Oxford security makes a woman cleaner scrub out ‘Happy International Women’s Day’ on the Clarendon steps,” Smith wrote. “What an image for #IWD .”
Oxford apologized for the gaffe later that day in a tweet. “We are deeply sorry for this and for offence caused,” the university wrote. “International Women’s Day is hugely important to Oxford. This should not have happened.”
However, the photo had already begun making the Internet rounds, prompting some to comment on its controversial nature. “Wow. Not a good look,” tweeted one user. “I don’t think management realised what an image that would make. They need to consult their marketing team.”

We are deeply sorry for this and for offence caused. International Women's Day is hugely important to Oxford. This should not have happened.

I appreciate your apology, but far more importantly can you please make sure that the woman asked to remove the message receives a heartfelt apology, a warm cup of tea, the rest of the day off and, along with all our precarious staff, good enough pay to live in this city.
— Sophie Smith (@DrSophieSmith) March 8, 2018
If only the "women's" part of the phrase was still visible, this would be one of those truly iconic images. Nevertheless, it really is some imagery. https://t.co/wHd8DhrGu4

— Ancient Sounds is on strike (@sounds_ancient) March 8, 2018
No, they're just removing graffiti, which is what it is. It's essentially vandalism isn't it. Nothing to do with international women's day.
— Dorbs (@dorbs84) March 8, 2018
No, it's not vandalism. Go into any Oxford college and you'll see (usually rowing) events celebrated in chalk on the old stone walls. It's Tradition.
— Ancient Sounds is on strike (@sounds_ancient) March 8, 2018
Utterly brilliant image, very Banksy-esque. The award for the biggest PR fail of the day goes to….😂
— Helen M (@HelenMy48) March 8, 2018
it is the structure of the image, the context – and the stance of the security guards. it is cold too. Not a great look to send a woman out to 'clear' an IWD message #tsk
— Christine Murray (@CelizMurray) March 8, 2018
It's more than time for people to realise. Ignorant or informed, the situation is unacceptable, which the university has acknowledged. It's unacceptable on any day and symbolically worse on #internationalwomensday2018
— B G (@7seashorse) March 8, 2018
Symbolism is important here. During a peaceful International women's day rally. A low paid and probably precariously employed female cleaner, was sent out in the freezing cold to clean chalk writing saying Happy International Women's Day. Did it have to be removed? Then?
