ARTICLE 96885946 Tom Brady scoffs at curses as he nabs the 'Madden NFL 18' cover english ARTICLE

Tom Brady's 2017/2018 season is doomed, and New England Patriots have EA Sports to thank for that.

The infuriatingly talented quarterback — full disclosure: I am a Giants fan, and therefore hate the Pats — has been chosen as the featured athlete on the cover of . Remarkably, this is Brady's first cover, despite the fact that he's the proud owner of Super Bowl rings.

Some see the distinction as a dubious honor, thanks to the so-called "Curse." Every game in the series since has featured one of the league's stars on its cover and, more often than not, those featured players go on to struggle in the subsequent season, which usually starts right after 's annual release.

Madden NFL 18's Cover Athlete Is Tom Brady
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be the cover athlete of Madden NFL 18, Electronic Arts has announced.
For the first time in Madden NFL history, the cover athletes in back-to-back years are teammates, as the five-time Super Bowl champion follows last year's cover athlete, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Madden NFL 18 will release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One worldwide on August 25. The latest installment in the long-running sports franchise will be powered by Frostbite, which, according to EA, "delivers a significant visual leap not only to the players, but crowds, stadiums and more."

Tom Brady has to fight off the Madden curse, in addition to Father Time
Rob Gronkowski struggled through injuries in 2016 after appearing on Madden 17. Now it’s Tom Brady’s time to face the curse.
Tom Brady plans to play for six or seven more years, according to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft , but another hurdle was put in the quarterback’s path Friday morning with the announcement that he will be on the cover of EA’s Madden 18 .
“I'm not one to believe in curses, so I'm ready to take the challenge head on like always!” Tom Brady said in a release. “It doesn't stand a chance!!!”
The curse that Brady is referring to is the legendary Madden curse — a streak of misfortune that struck players who were on the cover of the video game franchise. At one point, seven athletes in nine years had poor seasons after appearing on the Madden cover.
But it went dormant for a while. Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson set the record for receiving yards after appearing on Madden 13, and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman was a first-team All-Pro after earning a spot on Madden 15.
Patriots fans may be a little sensitive to the curse, though. Rob Gronkowski was on the cover a year ago and he struggled through injuries in 2016, eventually landing on injured reserve due to a back injury that required surgery to repair. New England went on to win Super Bowl 51, but the tight end watched from the sideline.
Losing Brady would be a much bigger deal.
The quarterback turns 40 in August. That puts him on the fast track for a career decline. Most passers’ time in the NFL ended before that age, and only Brett Favre, Warren Moon, and Vinny Testaverde started at least eight games after reaching their 40s.
Brady insists his time in the NFL isn’t coming to an end too soon, and he’ll now have to traverse the Madden curse to keep that promise.

Tom Brady is on the cover of ‘Madden 18: G.O.A.T. Edition’
It’s not Tom Brady’s first time on a video game cover, but it will be his first Madden cover.
There aren’t many accolades that Tom Brady hasn’t notched off his career checklist, but now he can scratch off one more. For the first time, he will be on the cover of EA’s Madden franchise when the game honors some of the NFL’s all-time best players in Madden NFL 18: G.O.A.T. Edition.
Brady, 39, has never been featured on the Madden cover. However, he was the cover athlete on NFL GameDay 2003 — a now defunct franchise. Here is his first cover on Madden:
The concern for the New England Patriots will be if the famous Madden curse claims another victim. Tight end Rob Gronkowski graced the cover a season ago, but he played in just eight games and watched Super Bowl 51 from the sideline after back surgery landed him on injured reserve.
Brady isn’t concerned about the curse and even threw in a few exclamation points to make sure he got the point across.
“The Madden NFL 18 cover is a great honor for me,” said Brady. “Especially since I have been playing the game since growing up next to EA headquarters in the Bay Area. I'm not one to believe in curses, so I'm ready to take the challenge head on like always! It doesn't stand a chance!!!”
Brady has a strong argument as the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.) at the quarterback position after earning an NFL-record fifth Super Bowl ring in 2016. He’s a two-time NFL MVP and fourth all-time in both passing yards (61,582) and touchdowns (456).
Along with the announcement that Brady will be on the cover, EA released a trailer for the new game:
His spot on the cover marks the first time that teammates have earned the honor in back-to-back seasons.

Tom Brady will be on the cover of the newest 'Madden' video game
When EA Sports' "Madden NFL 18" launches worldwide on Friday, August 25, it will arguably have the most recognizable face in football on its cover: Tom Brady.
Here is the cover; you can see the first trailer below:
EA Sports
It is the second straight year in which a member of the New England Patriots will be on the cover, following Rob Gronkowski a year ago. While Gronk's season ended early with an injury, Brady does not seem worried about a "Madden curse."
"The 'Madden NFL 18' cover is a great honor for me," Brady said. "Especially since I have been playing the game since growing up next to EA headquarters in the Bay Area. I'm not one to believe in curses, so I'm ready to take the challenge head on like always."

Tom Brady plays as Seahawks and Packers in 'Madden,' because his son keeps picking Patriots
It was announced on Friday that Tom Brady will be on the cover of Madden NFL 18: G.O.A.T Edition, which is either great or worrisome, depending on whether you believe in the Madden Curse ( Brady does not .) In the wake of this news, Brady revealed a bit about his history with the Madden franchise that isn’t just as a playable character in the game.
In an interview with ESPN , Brady revealed he used to work out at Electronic Arts’ gym, since they were located in his hometown, and he had a family friend that worked there. He also revealed that whenever he plays Madden with his son Jack, most times he has to face the video game version of Tom Brady and the Patriots :
When he does play Madden, Brady said he usually finds himself overmatched by the oldest of his three children, 9-year-old Jack, who often chooses the Patriots as his team, forcing his father to compete against his own franchise.
"I don't like doing it," Brady said. "It does feel weird. I feel like I'm going up against my own guys that I love. Julian [Edelman] catches a pass, and I've got to tackle him. I've been Green Bay, because I like that offense. And I've been Seattle, because I love being that defense.
On the one hand, it’s adorable that Jack wants to play as his dad in video game form; all the championships in the world can’t compare to your own kid wanting to be like you, like most children would look up to comic book heroes. It’s also cool to see Brady acknowledge how good the Packers and Seahawks are, especially after meeting Seattle at Super Bowl XLIX.
On the other hand, I wish these matchups would be recorded on video, just so everyone can see how much Brady struggles playing against his video game self. Get a Twitch account, Tom. We need to see your son school you in Madden as Touchdown Tom .
