22 d ago The Next WebThe BlackBerry Key2 LE is a $399 phone with a QWERTY keyboard
Read on The Next Web | Share | Tweet

TCL Communications, the Chinese company that licensed the BlackBerry name in 2016 (and has been killing it ever since) today announced the BlackBerry Key2 LE. The BlackBerry Key2 LE is a reworking of the phone released by TCL earlier this year, in order to bring it to a more palatable mid-range price point, and honestly, there aren’t too many surprises here. As is the case with virtually every single phone release nowadays, the pertinent details leaked out long before its release. It keeps the same (and incredible) physical keyboard found on the Key2 LE, which boasts delightfully clickable keys that…

22 d ago TechRadar :: BlackBerry Key2 LE announced as an affordable alternative to the Key2
Read on TechRadar | Share | Tweet

The BlackBerry Key2 is a business-focused phone with a hardware keyboard and a dual-lens camera, but now the BlackBerry Key2 LE has been announced, ticking all those boxes at a much lower price.
The BlackBerry Key2 LE has a 4.5-inch 1080 x 1620 LCD screen with a physical keyboard underneath it, just like the full fat Key2. And like that phone it also has a handy Speed Key, which acts as a shortcut to various functions, plus 52 customizable keyboard shortcuts.
As noted above it also has a dual-lens camera, but this is one area where you can see how the price was kept down, as the BlackBerry Key2 LE has a 13MP and 5MP pairing, while the standard Key2 has a pair of 12MP cameras.
The Key2 LE’s Snapdragon 636 chipset and 4GB of RAM also make it slightly less powerful, and its battery is smaller too at 3,000mAh, but you still get a fingerprint scanner, an 8MP front camera, up to 64GB of storage, a microSD card slot, Android 8.1 and access to all the sorts of features you’d expect from a BlackBerry handset.
Read our hands on: BlackBerry Key2 LE review Putting security first
That includes a ‘Locker’ where you can keep apps, documents and photos private, BlackBerry’s DTEK app, which can detect potential security risks, support for dual accounts so you can keep work and personal separate on a single phone, and BlackBerry Hub, which houses all your messages from various different sources in one place.
The battery, while fairly small, apparently lasts up to 22 hours and supports fast charging, and the design of the BlackBerry Key2 LE includes a newly designed soft textured back, to provide better in-hand grip and minimize the risk of it being dropped.
And as noted, this is cheaper than the standard BlackBerry Key2. That phone costs $649/£579 (around AU$1,035), while the BlackBerry Key2 LE starts at $399 / £349 (roughly AU$625) for the 32GB model and rises to $449 / £399 (around AU$710) for the 64GB one.
It’s not available yet, but is set to launch starting next month, and when it does you should be able to choose between Slate, Champagne and Atomic colors.

22 d ago The Verge :: The BlackBerry Key2 LE gives you a physical keyboard for less cash
Read on The Verge | Share | Tweet

BlackBerry’s Key2 didn’t exactly win over the world when it came out. The best that can be said is that it’s a phone with a physical keyboard for people who really like phones with physical keyboards.
But that isn’t stopping BlackBerry (and TCL, which owns the BlackBerry name and brand) from trying again with the new Key2 LE. It’s a lower-specced, cheaper version of the Key2 that brings features like the iconic keyboard at a more affordable price.
Keyboard aside, the price may be the most important part. The Key2 LE is set to cost $399 for a 32GB model, or $449 for a 64GB model. That’s dramatically less than the standard Key2’s $649 price tag.
That discount comes at a cost, however: the Key2 LE has a weaker processor,...

24 d ago TechRadarThis Samsung portable NVMe drive is faster than your SSD
Read on TechRadar | Share | Tweet

Samsung has rolled out its very first portable SSD featuring NVMe speeds, the Portable SSD X5.
The Samsung Portable SSD X5 delivers 2,800MB/s read speeds and 2,300MB/s write speeds, all piped over a ThunderBolt 3 USB-C connection that supports up to 40Gbps of bandwidth. That’s much, much faster than Samsung’s last Portable SSD T5 , which maxed out at only 462MB/s reads and 323MB/s writes.
According to the South Korean electronics firm, the new portable drive can transfer a 20GB 4K video file in just 12 seconds. Samsung also says users can expect the new drive to be 5.2 times faster than the widely used SATA interface portable SSDs and up to 25.5 times faster than external HDDs.
Other than incredible transfer speeds, the X5 features a full-metal body and non-slip bottom mat wrapped around a shock-resistant internal frame and rugged metal housing – which, all together can withstand accidental drops of up to two-meters (or 6.6 feet).
An internal heatsink and Dynamic Thermal Guard technology and a heat sink help the drive from overheating itself. Samsung is also backing up all X5 devices with a three-year limited warranty.
The Samsung Portable SSD X5 will be available starting on September 3rd in three capacities: $399 (about £310, AU$540) for the 500GB model, $699 (about £540, AU$950) for the 1TB model and $1,399 (about £1,085, AU$1,900) for the 2TB model.

Samsung has introduced a portable X-series NVMe SSD with support for Thunderbolt 3. The new Samsung Portable SSD X5, with its 40Gbps bandwidth, can hit read speeds of 2,800 MB/s, which is several times faster than SATA-based portable SSDs. The Portable SSD X5 costs $399.99 for the 500GB model, $699.99 for the 1TB model, and $1,399.99 for the 2TB premium version. It ships beginning September 3rd.
But since this is specifically a Thunderbolt 3 drive, laptops that only support USB won’t be compatible. You’ll definitely need a recent, high-end machine to use the X5 and take advantage of what it can do.

The SSD is meant to handle 4K video editing, real-time 3D rendering, and high-resolution RAW files. You can...

Protesters interrupted the event several times on Thursday night. Trump railed against the news media, as he is known to do at the typically raucous campaign events. "And now tomorrow, you're gonna read headlines, 'Trump had protesters all over the place,'" Trump said during his speech, after a protester interrupted him and was escorted out. "One person, major protest. But are they going to talk about the thousands and thousands of people inside of this arena and outside of the arena where we put screens? No."

If you’re a Yahoo or AOL email user, advertisers have a pretty good picture of exactly who you are because Yahoo and AOL are scanning your emails.
According to the Wall Street Journal , Oath, the Verizon subsidiary that owns both email providers, “has been pitching a service to advertisers that analyzes more than 200 million Yahoo Mail inboxes and the rich user data they contain.” This data is then used to figure out what products and services to target its users with. The pitch also broadens out to bring AOL users’ emails into the fold.
After Verizon acquired AOL in 2015 and then Yahoo in 2017, the telecommunications giant rolled the two companies under a subsidiary that houses its digital content properties called Oath. Properties such as Huffington Post, Engadget, Tumblr, and Techcrunch all operate under the Oath umbrella. Using this data obtained through users’ emails, Oath can offer its advertisers precision ad targeting across these digital media properties. Read more...

Oath confirmed to the WSJ that it performs email scannings and said that it only scans promotional emails, usually from retailers. Users have the ability to opt out, it said. Oath’s argument is that email is an expensive system, and people can’t expect a free service without some value exchanged.

The US first lady opted for total glamour when asked to dig a hole in the White House garden. But was her outfit remotely appropriate for the task in hand?
Melania Trump has been gardening again , planting an Eisenhower-era oak sapling in the White House grounds . It means that her gardening wardrobe has come under further scrutiny . Did she wear 4in Christian Louboutin stilettos to aerate the soil? Did she choose a $4,000 floral Valentino skirt for its horticultural motif? The first lady barely has to lift a gold-tipped ceremonial spade for the jokes to begin.
“Actually, that’s not a spade, it’s a shovel,” says the gardening expert Alys Fowler. “I suspect she was given that in recognition of the fact that she was never going to put her foot on it in those shoes.” Aside from the obvious issues, such as the propensity of stilettos to sink into the mud, Fowler is worried that Trump’s footwear is problematic. “If you are going to lean over and try to lift something quite heavy, that’s a real strain on your lower back.”

23 d ago Business Insider :: $71 billion Japanese giant Panasonic is pulling its European headquarters out of the UK — and Brexit is to blame

Thomson Reuters
Japanese electronics giant Panasonic to move European headquarters out of the UK as a result of Brexit. New HQ will be based in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. The move is being undertaken "to avoid potential tax issues" linked to Brexit, according to Japanese media organisation Nikkei. Panasonic's announcement follows a warning from the Japanese business lobby that companies are "seriously concerned" about continuing Brexit uncertainty.

Panasonic, the £55 billion ($71 billion) Japanese electronics giant, has announced plans to move its European headquarters out of the UK as Brexit uncertainty continues to weigh on the minds of major international corporations using Britain as a base.
The company, best known for its televisions, hi-fi systems, and cameras, said on Thursday that it plans to shift its main European office from near London to the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

22 d ago TechCrunch :: Panasonic to move its European HQ out of the UK because Brexit
Read on TechCrunch | Share | Tweet

Chalk up yet another Brexit deficit: Japanese electronics firm Panasonic will be moving its European headquarters from the UK to Amsterdam in October because it’s worried about the tax implications if it stays, the Nikkei Asian Review reports.
The company is concerned it could face tax liabilities if the UK shifts its corporate tax regime as a result of Brexit.
Laurent Abadie, CEO of Panasonic Europe, told the publication Japan could treat the U.K. as a tax haven if the country lowers its corporate rate — as the government has indeed suggested it will to try to make itself a more attractive destination for businesses once it’s outside the European Union’s trading bloc.
In November 2016 the UK Prime Minister announced a review of the country’s corporate tax rate — saying the government could move to substantially cut the rate below the current 20%.
Prior to that, former chancellor George Osborne pledged to cut the rate to below 15%.
At the same time as announcing the rate review, the PM unveiled a package of business-focused measures — intended to try to quell fears around Brexit. Although a rate cut evidently isn’t friendly to every business.
In the case of Panasonic, it’s concerned that if the U.K. gets designated a tax-haven by Japan it could be saddled with back taxes back home. So moving to stay regionally headquartered within the European Union removes that risk.
Abadie also told the Nikkei Asian Review that moving its regional HQ to continental Europe will help it avoid any barriers to the flow of people and goods thrown up by Brexit.
The shape of any deal — or even whether there will be a deal between the UK and the EU, post-Brexit — still remains to be seen just a few months before the UK is scheduled to exit the EU, in March 2019. So businesses are having to make key decisions based on possible or potential outcomes.
Meanwhile the UK’s regulatory influence in the region continues to be diminished…
In terms of trade, access to talent, and regulatory influence, we're relegating ourselves to the second division.

Ghost towns aren't only found in movies. All across the world, there are mysterious abandoned cities that stand as ominous time capsules capturing the imaginations and vacation days of thousands of tourists.
If you've got a sense of adventure and a camera, you may want to pack your bags and head out to explore some of the most fascinating abandoned cities around the world.
Wittenoom, Australia was overrun by asbestos. Wikimedia Commons
Founded in 1946, Wittenoom was born as a mining town in Western Australia. The nearby gorge was brimming with blue asbestos, an important raw building material in the early 20th century. By the early 1950s, Wittenoom was the largest town in Pilbara region.
Amid growing health concerns, the declining demand for asbestos led to the mine closing in 1966 with most of the residents moving away to find other work, according to ABC. Wittenoom was officially closed in 2007 and the Australian government took steps to limit access to the former mining town and removed it from all official maps
Due to the nature of the mining that took place there, asbestos fibers are still found in the topsoil and air around Wittenoom making it dangerous to spend too much time in the town.
As of 2018, there are only three permanent residents of Wittenoom who defy the Australian government.

Ruby, Arizona is an abandoned mining town. Wikimedia Commons
Standing as one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the American Southwest, Ruby, Arizona remains as a reminder of the wild west. With a mine founded in the 1870s that produced gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper, Ruby officially became a town when it opened its first post office in 1910.
Wild West history buffs aren't the only people interested in Ruby, true crime aficionados and nature lovers should be fascinated with Ruby as well.
The town and the surrounding area were the sites of three horrific double homicides known as the Ruby Murders. These led to one of the largest manhunts in Southwest history , according to Legends of America.
Of the crime, the judge at the time, Judge W.A. O'Connor reportedly said, "The crimes of which you have been convicted are perhaps the cruelest ever committed in Arizona. Let the punishment that awaits you serve as a warning to others who may contemplate the commission of similar crimes.”
The mines are now home to an enormous colony of Mexican free-tail bats . The giant cloud of bats can be seen rushing from the mine entrances at sundown during the summer.
Officially abandoned in 1940 , the remains of Ruby now reside on private land, but it is open to the public for a small fee. It remains one of the best preserved western towns in the US.

Varosha, Cyprus was once a popular tourist destination. Wikimedia Commons/Ballantyne108
It isn't often that a tourist destination frequented by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot becomes a ghost town. But that's exactly what happened to the Varosha section of Famagusta in Cyprus.
Throughout the early 1970s, Varosha was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, according to BBC. In 1974, Turkey invaded Cyprus. As the opposing Turkish and Greek armies descended on the area around Varosha, the residents fled for their lives.
According to BBC, Varosha has remained abandoned and under the control of the Turkish Military  since 1974. It has been fenced off, and nobody but military and UN personnel are allowed into the once beautiful tourist destination. There have been numerous attempts to broker a deal that will once again open up Varosha, but nothing has been agreed upon.
While visiting Famagusta, you can view the high rises and beaches of Varosha that are slowly being retaken by nature from the far side of the military fence.

22 d ago Business Insider :: Abandoned skyscrapers around the world and the stories behind them
Read on Business Insider | Share | Tweet

Ho New/Reuters
Not all buildings that appear impressive in a city skyline are as polished on the inside. Cities around the world contain abandoned or unfinished skyscrapers due to financial crises that forced the end of construction, civil war fighting that turned the buildings into battlegrounds, or reasons that remain a mystery.
Here are 10 abandoned skyscrapers around the world and how they got to be that way.
Ghost Tower — Bangkok, Thailand Nopkamon Tanayakorn/Shutterstock
The Sathorn Unique is popularly known as Thailand's "Ghost Tower" by thrill-seeking travelers who are willing to risk trespassing to explore it.
Construction on the 49-floor building began in the 1990s but ceased in 1997 due to the  Asian Financial Crisis , according to Atlas Obscura.
Urban explorers make their way through the building's unfinished rooms littered with debris and covered in graffiti to enjoy a sweeping view of Bangkok.

Sterick Building — Memphis, Tennessee Samuel Grant/Wikimedia Commons
Known as the "Queen of Memphis," the Sterick Building was completed in 1929 and was the tallest skyscraper in Memphis until 1962 (it's 365 feet tall and has 29 floors). It was designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick and financed by  Ross E. Sterling — hence "The Sterick," according to Memphis Heritage.
The building once held 2,000 workers in addition to a barber shop, beauty parlor, bank, and pharmacy.
But as the building's ownership changed hands multiple times, companies began to move out. By 1986, it was empty .

Centro Financiero Confinanzas — Caracas, Venezuela Fernando Llano/AP
Centro Financiero Confinanzas is an empty 45-story building known as the Torre de David, or Tower of David.
Construction began in 1990 but stopped due to a financial crisis in Venezuela and the death of the developer  J. David Brillembourg who the building is named for , according to Atlas Obscura.
Some 3,000 people took up residence in the concrete shell of a building, earning the building the distinction of "the world's tallest slum."   All were evicted in 2014 .
