Searches for International Men's Day spike on International Women's Day because of course they do
Proving that men just can't leave anything alone — trust me, I know! — Google searches for "International Men's Day" spike on "International Women's Day" as Men Who Are Mad Online™ whine, "But when is MY day?"
SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about International Women's Day
Reddit user R1zzles posted this clever graph using data culled from Google Trends. It shows that searches do tend to spike right on International Women's Day, which is celebrated on March 8.
For the record, there is an official International Men's Day , for some reason, celebrated on November 19. But, apparently many men are not content with the knowledge the other 364 days a year (365 days on leap years!) are set aside for "Well, actually..." tweets.  Read more...

Let's put the politics back into International Women's Day | Ash Sarkar
From housing to austerity and the pay gap, this annual event must get out of its depoliticised gender silo
Happy International Women’s Day! It’s the one day a year we can come together as a gender to celebrate a 13% disparity in public sector pay by drinking pink IPA and liberating our “This Is What a Feminist Looks Like” T-shirts from the back of the wardrobe (if you find yourself bothered by the fact that the women who manufactured them were paid just 62p an hour , it’s time for another fuchsia pint).

197 d ago Business Insider :: 10 female-founded startups to support for International Women’s Day
Read on Business Insider | Share | Tweet

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.
Today is International Women's Day (IWD), a day to both celebrate the social, economic, political, and cultural achievements of women and continue the push towards women's equality. In the business world, women are founding companies at record rates. According to the National Women's Business Council , their businesses employ over eight million workers and generate over $1.4 trillion in revenue.
They still only comprise 36% of the country's businesses and there's a lot of progress to be made (in fact, this year's IWD theme is #PressforProgress). However, as part of a team that has its finger on the pulse of up-and-coming consumer brands, I have to say we're certainly witnessing a wave of female entrepreneurship that provides inspiration and hope for the road ahead.
These female-founded startups should always be on your radar for the innovative products and services they offer, but especially today on IWD as many of these brands are putting forth powerful initiatives and campaigns to empower and support other women.
ThirdLove ThirdLove/Instagram
Bra company ThirdLove offers a Try Before Buying program that lets customers try out bras for 30 days. When these gently-worn bras are returned, they're hand-sorted and then donated. Since 2013, ThirdLove has donated over $3.5 million worth of bras to women’s charities. In the last year alone, it donated over $500,000 worth of bras to more than 20 women’s charities, including donations to the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, as well as the Northern California wildfires.

Mejuri Mejuri
The fine jewelry brand is revolutionizing the industry by keeping costs low and encouraging women to buy jewelry for themselves instead of waiting for someone else to buy it for them — and they are finding success, with a repeat purchase rate of 25%. Mejuri says that 87% of its community members are women, and if they’re not gifting themselves, they’re overwhelmingly gifting other women.

Universal Standard Universal Standard
Plus-size inclusive fashion brand Universal Standard has a unique policy that reduces the anxiety of shopping: its Universal Fit Liberty (UFL) allows shoppers to exchange pieces from its core collection if their size fluctuates within a year of purchase. All gently worn clothing returned through UFL will be laundered and donated to charities like Dress for Success and First Steps that support women trying to return to the workforce.

Read on Business Insider | Share | Tweet

While some countries are making progress towards equal pay,  the rest of the world is seeing a bigger gender pay gap than ever . In just about every occupation in the US, women earn less than men. Globally, women earn on average 57% of what men earn. So how do we close the gender pay gap ? Ultimately, it's not about equal pay for equal work. The solution boils down to how flexible work is approached.

Closing the gender pay gap isn't as simple as championing equal pay for equal work.
The US Census Bureau's latest data indicates women earned 82% of what men earned in 2016. According to the World Economic Forum  (WEF), women earn about 57% of what men earn globally. The global gender pay gap is widening, and at the rate things are going,  WEF predicts  the economic gap between men and women won't be closed for another 217 years. 198 d ago SB Nation :: Serena Williams announces her return to tennis will be on International Women’s Day
Read on SB Nation | Share | Tweet

YES!
Serena Williams was always firm in her plan to return to tennis after the birth of her daughter Alexis, but now that plan is in action. On Wednesday Williams posted a photo on Instagram outlining her next steps, which includes a return on International Women’s Day.
A post shared by Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) on Mar 7, 2018 at 7:16am PST
“It’s official. My comeback is here. This Thursday I will start playing tennis again professionally for the first time since giving birth to my daughter. This whole month I am playing tournaments in California and Florida- both my home states. Thursday, the day I play my very first match, marks international women’s day. My comeback could not have come on a better day and I decided I wanted to do something different let you all be apart of my long journey back.”
Williams’ last tournament was the 2017 Australian Open, which took place just after finding out she was pregnant. The return now means Serena will have some time to get back to speed in minor tournaments before Wimbledon in June.
Williams was the world No.1, but is currently unranked after taking a break. Her ranking was protected, meaning she can still use it to gain entry into majors — but it’s unlikely she would be seeded at Wimbledon due to the time off.

198 d ago The Guardian :: This year, let’s make International Women’s Day really count | Letters
Read on The Guardian | Share | Tweet

Paula James and Alison Penn say women have been robbed of a secure retirement, Sue Ferns says joining a union is a woman’s best route to fighting for gender equality, and Anne Quesney agrees that ‘catcalling’ should be made a hate crime

The mainstream media is celebrating the centenary of women’s partial suffrage, granted in 1918. No doubt there will be limited coverage of International Women’s Day on Thursday 8 March. And yet women continue to suffer the harsh effects of needless austerity, as they are still the main managers and carers of their own and others’ families. We face exploitation as paid workers and discrimination as women across the board.
Both injustices are embedded in a patriarchal system which only concedes equal pay and opportunity when and where it maximises profit. This is the market economy. The global recession has hit women hard and they face a double whammy as producers and reproducers. Sexual harassment and violent assault come with the territory. However, we are strong in the struggle, as the current strike over university pensions demonstrates. Women are on the picket lines of the University and College Union (UCU), protesting against changes proposed by the managers of the university superannuation scheme, which will substantially reduce our pensions by putting them at the mercy of the market. The excuse is a deficit which clearly does not exist except in the minds of dystopian future fantasists.
