Elon Musk’s Boring Company will build high-speed transit tunnels in Chicago

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced the city would accept a proposal from Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build a high-speed underground public transportation system. The deal: Chicago’s elevated train system, “the L” to locals, has operated for more than 125 years, but traffic in the windy city is anything but breezy. Last year, mayor Emanuel begged innovators and technologists to submit proposals to help update the city’s public transportation system. Elon to the rescue: The city’s deputy mayor, Bob Rivkin, actually name-checked Musk last year when the city issued the request, saying “The RFQ is agnostic about whether this…

Elon Musk's Boring Company Is Building an 18-Mile Tunnel In Chicago
On Thursday morning, the Chicago mayor’s office announced that it had selected Elon Musk’s tunnel digging venture, the Boring Company, to build a high-speed transportation system linking O’Hare airport and downtown Chicago.
Up until this point, the Boring Company was just a handful of employees working from two trailers in the SpaceX parking lot, where it is digging a test tunnel. Boring has developed a tunnel excavation system that can currently excavate at 1/15 the speed of a snail , but so far the only products it has sold are $1 million worth of hats and $10 million worth of flamethrowers .
In this sense, the Chicago deal is a major validation for Musk’s boring side project.
Chicago’s airport loop will consist of consist of an 18-mile rail network for autonomous, 16-passenger cars that can reach peak speeds of 150 miles per hour. This is by far the company’s largest city contract so far. Last year, the Boring Company received permission to dig a 12 mile tunnel between Baltimore and Washington, DC , and last month the city of Los Angeles granted the company permission to build a 2.7-mile test tunnel .
According to the Chicago Tribune , rides on the Loop will probably cost around $25 and the system will be able to move about 2,000 passengers per hour. Boring estimated the project will cost less than $1 billion, but so far actual costs have not been made public.
“We’re taking a bet on a guy who doesn’t like to fail, and his resources,“ Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel said ahead of a Thursday afternoon joint press conference with Musk. “The risk—with no financial risk—is I’m betting on a guy who has proven in space, auto and now a tunnel, that he can innovate and create something of the future. Given his track record, we are taking his reputation and saying, ‘This is a guy in two other transportation modes who has not failed.’ That’s what we’re doing.”
Despite Emanuel's enthusiasm, which makes sense given that he is running for re-election, Chicago has a history of pursuing ambitious civic projects that never materialize and the O'Hare loop still faces a number of hurdles . For starters, the Boring Company's excavation technology is still experimental so despite an aggressive three-year construction time frame, it may end up taking much longer. Moreover, the city still needs to negotiate and finalize a contract with the Boring Company and the plan must get approval from the city council.
Still, Musk is known as much for his grandiose promises as his ability to follow through on him, so it'd hardly be surprising if Chicagoans find themselves zipping across the city in Boring Company tunnels in a few years. Whether it'll actually be completed on Emanuel's time frame, however, is a different story, so until the first loop passengers disembark for O'Hare, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Chicago selects Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build express line from O‘Hare
The Boring Company
On Thursday morning, the city of Chicago announced that the Mayor's Office had chosen The Boring Company to build an express line between O'Hare International Airport and Block 37 in the city's downtown area, known as The Loop. The line will consist of two parallel tunnels, and it could take as little as 12 minutes to travel from point to point, according to a press release from the city.
The announcement is a major step for The Boring Company, which was started in 2016 by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Musk founded the company in the hope of alleviating city gridlock by building more tunnels, an endeavor that has set the company's engineers toward improving tunneling techniques.

The Boring Company wins bid to negotiate deal for high-speed, autonomous public transit in Chicago
The Boring Company
Elon Musk's Boring Company won a bid that could bring autonomous, high-speed public transit to Chicago. The Boring Company and the city of Chicago will begin negotiations to develop the company's Loop transit system, which could transport passengers between downtown Chicago and O'Hare International Airport in an estimated 12 minutes. It'll be called The Chicago Express Loop. Musk's company was selected out of four other bidders. If the Boring Company and Chicago reach a final deal, the project would be privately funded, but many other questions remain, because Loop has not been tested at scale. It is unknown when the project will go online.

The Boring Company, the tunneling venture led by Elon Musk that seeks to build underground pathways that would house high-speed autonomous transit, landed a big win in Chicago on Wednesday night.
The company and city officials will enter negotiations to bring the Loop transit system to Chicago. Loop aims to shuttle passengers between downtown Chicago and O'Hare International Airport in 12 minutes, at speeds of more than 100 mph, with an estimated trip cost of $20 to $25 per ride, the Chicago Tribune reported . Elon Musk’s Boring Company will build a high-speed train to Chicago airport
You could take the regular 40-minute train from one of the busiest airports in the world, or how about a 12-minute high-speed trip?
The Boring Company , headed by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, has won a bid to build a high-speed train from Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport to downtown.
SEE ALSO: Elon Musk's Boring Company is 'a few months' from offering free rides beneath L.A.
The new rail line, or Chicago Express Loop, will see 12-minute trips in electric vehicles called "skates," from the airport's new terminals to the Block 37 super-station downtown. This trip usually takes approximately 30-40 minutes, whether by train via Chicago's Blue Line, or by cab, Uber or Lyft. Read more...

Elon Musk’s Boring Company approved to build high-speed Chicago transit link
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the selection of Elon Musk’s Boring Company to build and operate a multibillion-dollar rapid transit link between O’Hare International Airport and the city’s downtown.
The company plans to transport passengers between O’Hare and Block 37 in the Loop in approximately 12 minutes (one way) — typically a 40-minute trip via the city’s Blue Line — by utilizing electric vehicles that run through new twin underground tunnels. The project will be funded entirely by the company with no taxpayer subsidy.
But whether or not he’ll need to sell more flamethrowers to raise the funds isn‘t clear: under the deal, Musk would front the construction costs and then pocket all the revenue from the system’s transit fees...

95 d ago TechCrunch :: Elon Musk has new plans to tunnel into Chicago
Read on TechCrunch | Share | Tweet

If you’re planning to fly into Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport at some point in the future, you might be pleasantly surprised by the transit options. The city struck a deal with Elon Musk today to move forward with its plan to build a high-speed rail between O’Hare and downtown Chicago.
In November, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced his decision to go forward with plans for the high-speed rail line and asked for bids from teams interested in building and financing the project. Emmanuel’s goal is to transport travelers from the airport to Chicago’s center in 20 minutes or fewer, and at roughly a third of the cost of an expensive taxi or ride-sharing app.
After five months of negotiations, the city announced that Musk’s company, The Boring Co. , beat out runner-up O’Hare Xpress LLC, a consortium that includes the companies Meridiam, Antarctica Capital, JLC Infrastructure, First Transit and Mott MacDonald (the latter of which has experience in airport transportation, having developed plans for London’s Heathrow .)
Musk’s plan proposes a 16-passenger autonomous vehicle that can whip passengers at speeds up to 100 MPH through tunnels between the airport and downtown. The final route of the new transit system is still being finalized, but Musk estimates that these vehicles could transport passengers downtown in only 12 minutes — a dramatic decrease from the usual 30- to 40-minute taxi ride — and for just $20-$25.
Officials from the city and Boring have stated that it’s too soon to estimate a timeframe or final cost for this project, but have stated that Boring will be fronting the bill.
While Emmanuel seems optimistic about this new venture, telling the Chicago Tribune “every time [Chicago has] been an innovator in transportation, we have seized the future,” the fact remains that despite Musk’s emerging plans to construct these tunnels in cities like LA, DC and now Chicago, he has yet to actually complete one. As a man who once stated that public transportation “ sucks ,” time will tell how successful The Boring Co. and its founder can be at actually revamping it.

95 d ago Mashable :: Elon Musk and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel hold 'Loop' press conference to shut down the haters
Read on Mashable | Share | Tweet

Haters gonna hate, but that's not stopping Elon Musk and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel from pushing forward on a potentially game-changing new high-speed rail project.
Musk and Mayor Emanuel held a press conference on Thursday to announce The Boring Company's winning bid for an underground high-speed rail between downtown Chicago and O'Hare International Airport.
"This is the fastlane to Chicago's future," Mayor Emanuel said.
The line will be called "The Chicago Express Loop," also known as The X. Pods made by Tesla will travel between 125 - 150 mph, transporting travelers the approximately 16 miles between Block 37 in downtown Chicago to the airport in about 12 minutes. It's not Hyperloop , but it's fast — about four times faster than existing public transportation, at least. Read more...

122 d ago FuturismMiss Elon Musk’s Boring Company Update? Here’s What You Need to Know
Read on Futurism | Share | Tweet

The hottest ticket in Los Angeles last night wasn’t to a concert or movie premiere. It was for a seat in a synagogue to hear a tech CEO update people on a venture literally called the Boring Company.
But that CEO was Elon Musk, and the Boring Company aims to completely reinvent public transportation, starting in the city with arguably the worst traffic in the U.S. If you weren’t one of the lucky few to be in the house (of worship) for the session or didn’t catch the livestream , here’s what you missed.
Flying Cars Just Aren’t Viable
Musk doesn’t think his solution for “soul-destroying traffic” is the only one that could work. He just really doesn’t think flying cars will be either. He’s shared his distaste for the Jetsons’ preferred mode of transportation before, but in case you needed a reminder, according to Musk, flying cars will be:
Too dangerous. “Inevitably, someone’s not going to service their car properly, and they’re gonna drop a hubcap, and it’s gonna guillotine somebody.” Too noisy. “Like a hurricane…you can’t even fly the quietest helicopter through neighborhoods without bothering people.”
So, taking traffic in three dimensions “up” can’t work. Three dimensions “down,” though, that makes sense to Musk. Hence, the Boring Company.
Gary Is the One to Beat
The fastest tunnel drilling machine in the world is still ten-times slower than a snail, which is a hundred times slower than a human. Elon’s challenge for his team? “At least beat the snail,” co-panelist Steve Davis told the audience, gesturing to the small terrarium housing the Boring Company’s mascot, Gary the Snail.
To get there, they’ll need to overcome several hurdles. One is figuring out continuous mining. Currently, they drill for a bit. Stop. Place reinforcement segments. Repeat. That slows everything down, as does the need to remove dirt, so the company is looking for better ways to do both.
Besides increasing speed, Musk says the company is also looking for ways to eliminate the need for really long, expensive power lines (all the Boring Company’s machines are electric, of course) and transition to something “more like a cordless drill using Tesla battery packs.”
Image Credit: The Boring Company Building Blocks
The Boring Company also needs to cut costs, and one way they’ve found to do that is by creating bricks out of the dirt removed from the tunnels. The bricks are “rated for California seismic loads” and sell for about $.10 each. “They’re really great bricks,” said a straight-faced Musk, eliciting laughs from the crowd.
Musk also wants to create lego-style bricks in the same way and sell kits so people can build anything from pyramids to temples in their backyards. “It seems like a fun way to spend an afternoon,” he quipped. On a more practical level, the Boring Company is using the same removed dirt to create their own concrete reinforcement segments for the tunnels onsite. Waste not, want not.
Riding the Loop
The big news out of the session was the Loop , a new idea for a mass transit system Musk likens to “an autonomous underground multi-level car system.”
People enter and exit a “pod” at a parking-lot-sized station above-ground. Each pod is capable of holding about 16 people and travels at 241 kmh (150 mph). The system could make the trek from Downtown LA to LAX in about 8 minutes, or from The Getty to Union Station in 12 minutes — all for $1 per ride.
The Loop pods could eventually link up with Hyperloop routes. Those would be pressurized tunnels in which the pods travel even faster to cover distances between cities, such as LA to San Francisco.
Flamethrower Not a Flamethrower Update
And, of course, someone asked during the Q&A portion of the session when the company will deliver its “ Not a Flamethrowers .”
Musk’s answer: “Deliveries start in two weeks.” Apparently, shipping companies haven’t been keen on the idea of transporting devices containing propane, so the Boring Company will deliver the devices personally. “We’re just going to get some vans and people and deliver it to you,” said Musk.
So, while there’s no word on exactly when the Loop will be ready for action, you could be throwing flames by the end of the month. Mark your calendar.
