Pokémon Go launches Valentine's event hoping to lure loving players
Until 15 February, there will be a huge increase in duration of lures, up to six hours from the usual 30 minutes
Remember Pokémon Go? It’s still around, and now the smartphone game is celebrating Valentine’s Day with its latest in-game event.
Getting into the theme of love, perhaps the most exciting thing for Pokémon Goers is a huge increase in the duration of lures: the Pokémon-attracting devices will now last a whole six hours, 12 times longer than their standard 30-minute duration.

Pokémon Go gets Valentine’s Day event with a higher chance to attract pink pocket monsters
This Valentine’s Day, throw the flowers in the trash and cancel your reservations at that fancy restaurant. You and your significant other are spending this holiday with searching for virtual critters.
Niantic has revealed to GamesBeat that it plans to launch Pokémon Go’s first in-game event of 2017 for Valentine’s Day. This in-game special will begin today, February 8, starting at 11 a.m. Pacific time, and it will run through February 15 at 11 a.m. As part of the Valentine’s event, players will get a number of bonuses that will make certain monsters appear more frequently while also making certain items more effective than normal. This is the latest attempt by Niantic to keep its massive audience engaged and coming back to Pokémon Go, and it’s likely that this remix of the game’s existing content will help generate revenues for the game, which continues to make enough to have a spot in the top-10 highest-grossing apps in the $36.6 billion mobile-gaming industry.
Here’s a point-by-point breakdown of what you can expect:
Double candy when catching, hatching, or transferring Pokémon. Buddy Pokémon will find twice as much candy. Pink Pokémon like Chansey, Clefable, Porygon, and more will appear more often. Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Smoochum are more likely to emerge from hatching eggs. Lure Modules will also attract Pokémon for 6 hours instead of 30 minutes.
So call up your date, and let them know that true love means helping your partner grind out those last dozen Charmander candies.

Pokemon Go Valentine's Day Event Begins Today
Pokemon Go 's first event of 2017 kicks off today to celebrate Valentine's Day.
Players will receive various bonuses by playing over the next week. Catching, hatching, and transferring Pokemon will net you twice as much candy as usual, while your buddy Pokemon will find candy in half the usual time.
Additionally, "adorable pink Pokemon" will show up more frequently. A comprehensive list of what fits this bill wasn't shared, but we know Porygon, Clefable, and Chansey are definitely on it. Meanwhile, while hatching eggs, you'll be more likely to obtain a Cleffa, Smoochum, or Igglybuff.
Finally, Lure Modules will be far more effective than usual, lasting for six hours--12 times as long as the usual 30 minutes they're active for.
All of this begins today, February 8, at 11 AM PST. The event runs until next Wednesday, February 15, at the same time.

Pokémon Go is having a big Valentine's Day event — here's everything that's happening
Niantic
Pokémon Go is having its first big event of 2017, celebrating Valentine's Day with a slew of perks for players.
Those perks include more of the all-important "candy," a higher chance of capturing pink Pokémon, plus a more powerful Lure Module. It's all in the spirit of the holiday.
Here are the details, taken from Pokémon Go developer Niantic's blog.
From February 8 at 11 a.m. Pacific to February 15 at 11 a.m. Pacific: "Players will receive double the amount of candy when catching, hatching, and transferring Pokémon." "Buddy Pokémon will find candy twice as fast for their trainers." Lure Modules, which attract Pokémon, will last for six hours instead of 30 minutes. Love is in the air, it seems. You'll have a higher chance of catching pink Pokémon, including Chansey, Porygon, and Clefairy. Similarly, pink baby Pokémon like Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Smoochum — three of the newest additions to the game — will have a higher chance of hatching from eggs.
Pokémon Go isn't quite the fad it once was. But in January, the app analytics firm Sensor Tower reported that the game had passed $1 billion in revenue in the seven months since its July launch, which is no small feat. Big events like this stand to bring players back into the fold and bump up that revenue even further. And countries like South Korea are only now getting the game , making this a welcome rolling out of the red (or pink) carpet for new players.

Pokemon Go Valentine’s Day Event Offers Double Candy
Niantic has announced a new Pokemon Go event for Valentine’s Day.
Beginning today and running until February 15, players will receive double candy when catching Pokemon, hatching Pokemon from eggs, transferring Pokemon to the Professor, or finding candy with a buddy Pokemon.
Pink Pokemon including Chansey, Clefable, and Porygon will have an increased chance of spawning, and players are also more likely to hatch baby Pokemon including Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Smoochum. Lure modules , which normally last 30 minutes, will last for six hours during the event.
This is Pokemon Go’s fourth holiday event, following increased chances of meeting ghost Pokemon for Halloween , double experience for Thanksgiving , and free egg incubators for Christmas .

Read on GameSpot | Share | Tweet

[UPDATE] Here is a picture of the Pikachu party hat:
The original story is below.
To celebrate Pokemon Day next week, Niantic will hold an event inside of Pokemon Go . Starting on February 26, every Pikachu that players encounter in the game will be wearing a "festive party hat."
If you catch Pikachu during the event, you will get to keep its party hat forever, The Pokemon Company announced on its website . The event ends on March 6. Unfortunately, The Pokemon Company did not share a picture of Pikachu's hat; we'll add it to this story if it's made available.
Pokemon Day is February 27. That is the 21st anniversary of the series, which debuted in Japan in 1996.
This is not the first time that Niantic has given Pikachu a special hat as part of a limited-time event. Last year's Pokemon Go holiday event let players catch a version of Pikachu that wears a festive hat . The Christmas Pikachu could be evolved into a hat-wearing version of Raichu, though it remains to be seen if that can happen with the new party hat.
For more on Pokemon Day 2017 and how it will be celebrated, check out this roundup on the Pokemon website .
Last year's 20th anniversary Pokemon Day celebrations included a Super Bowl commercial and a party with actress Drew Barrymore .

240 d ago Business Insider :: These are the 80 new Pokémon in 'Pokémon GO'
Read on Business Insider | Share | Tweet

"Pokémon Go" just got a lot bigger this week, by about 80 Pokémon or so !
That's huge — like, Snorlax-huge — considering that the game started with only 142 of the original 151 Pokémon , the so-called "Gen 1" Pokémon. But in reality, there are hundreds of Pokémon, and the folks behind "Pokémon Go" are finally dipping back into the Pokédex for some new faces.
A new update is now live that finally allows you to catch the much-requested "Johto" region Pokémon from "Pokémon Silver & Gold" (aka "Gen 2" Pokémon). Of note: there are 100 Pokémon listed below, but some of these 100 aren't likely to appear in "Pokémon Go" (like all the Legendary Pokémon, for instance).
So, who are these mysterious new Pokémon? Let's find out, care of the official Pokédex (#152 to 251!):
152. Chikorita The Pokemon Company
"It uses the leaf on its head to determine the temperature and humidity. It loves to sunbathe."

153. Bayleef The Pokemon Company
"Bayleef’s neck is ringed by curled-up leaves. Inside each tubular leaf is a small shoot of a tree. The fragrance of this shoot makes people peppy."

153. Meganium The Pokemon Company
"The fragrance of Meganium’s flower soothes and calms emotions. In battle, this Pokémon gives off more of its becalming scent to blunt the foe’s fighting spirit."

The summer of 2016 was the summer of Pokémon Go. Everywhere you went, you could see people playing the popular augmented-reality mobile game. But our love affair with it was short-lived. By the time Winter came along, millions of players had deleted the app from their phones. It isn’t hard to see why. Any game that demands you leave the comfort of your home will struggle in cold and wet weather. There was also the problem that Pokémon Go’s gameplay had become repetitive. It’s hard to work up the enthusiasm to go out in the rain if all you’d catch…

239 d ago Business Insider :: Here is every single Pokémon currently in Pokémon Go
Read on Business Insider | Share | Tweet

Niantic
There are more than 200 Pokémon in Pokémon Go. The game now contains the entire first run of Pokémon, which originally debuted in the mid-'90s, along with around 100 creatures from its second-generation edition.
You cannot, however, catch them all. At least not yet.
Several "legendary" Pokémon — like Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres — are definitely not in the game yet. Other ultra-rare Pokémon, like Mew and Mewtwo, still haven't appeared either. A few creatures, such as Mr. Mime, are land-locked to certain continents.
Whether you're new to Pokémon Go or just want to familiarize yourself with what you can catch, we've put together the master list. We included their official descriptions and photos from the online Pokédex . And if you want additional info about each Pokémon, the  Pokédex  has that as well. (Note: Each Pokémon's number matches its official number in the Pokédex, not its order in the following list.)
Without further ado, here's every Pokémon you can currently find in Pokémon Go:
1. Bulbasaur
"Bulbasaur can be seen napping in bright sunlight. There is a seed on its back. By soaking up the sun's rays, the seed grows progressively larger."

2. Ivysaur
"There is a bud on this Pokémon's back. To support its weight, Ivysaur's legs and trunk grow thick and strong. If it starts spending more time lying in the sunlight, it's a sign that the bud will bloom into a large flower soon."

3. Venusaur
"There is a large flower on Venusaur's back. The flower is said to take on vivid colors if it gets plenty of nutrition and sunlight. The flower's aroma soothes the emotions of people."

Read on The Next Web | Share | Tweet

It seems Niantic has finally decided give loyal fans what they’ve been asking for as Pokemon Go is slated to get monster trading and real-time player battles very “soon.” In an interview with Waypoint, Niantic CEO John Hanke revealed the two features are already in the pipeline but will likely land gradually in a series of updates, in what he described as “an abbreviated form.” The new additions will not only make Pokémon battles much more scenic, but also allow players to collaborate by exchanging critters they’ve already hunted down. Hanke further said Niantic had intentions to roll out monster…

243 d ago Business Insider :: 'Pokémon Go' is getting a huge new update that adds 80 new Pokémon
Read on Business Insider | Share | Tweet

Niantic
Later this week, Pokémon Go will be getting a huge update that adds 80 new Pokémon and some very welcome new features to the 7-month-old smartphone sensation.
Without further ado, here's what's coming, according to a blog from Pokémon Go developer Niantic:
80 new Pokémon, taken from the classic Pokémon "Gold" and "Silver" Game Boy Color games. While Niantic hasn't yet shared the full list, it definitely includes fan-favorites Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Espeon, Umbreon, Merrill, Bellossom, and Hoppip, as revealed in a promotional image. Collectible "evolution items" that cause certain Pokémon to evolve. In Pokémon "Gold" and "Silver," for instance, the "King's Rock" item can cause Slowbro to evolve into Slowking when traded to another player — Niantic doesn't go into detail, but it seems a similar feature is coming to Pokémon Go. Two new types of berry to use while catching Pokémon: The Nanab Berry, which slows a Pokémon's movements, and the Pinap Berry, which doubles the amount of candy you get if your next catch attempt is successful.  New items to dress up your avatar, plus some premium items that you can purchase from the in-game Pokémon Go shop. You can earn currency for that shop by playing the game, or exchange real-world money.  Not strictly related to the game itself, but Niantic and Nintendo promise that they're replenishing retailer supplies of the hard-to-find Pokémon Go Plus wearable accessory this week.
The much-anticipated release of new Pokémon into Pokémon Go comes at an opportune time. Since it was released last summer, Pokémon Go has become a cultural phenomenon and generated an estimated $1 billion  for Niantic.
But early server issues, a string of buggy updates, and the delay of promised new features have since caused Pokémon Go to sink on the App Store's charts. Niantic has rekindled some interest in the game with holiday promotions , but a big update to the game itself is likely to draw in lapsed players and attract new ones.
Still, some big and long-promised features — namely, player-versus-player battling and Pokémon trading — are still MIA, even in this new update. Never fear, though: In a recent interview with Vice's Waypoint , Niantic CEO John Hanke promises that those features are "going to be done soon."

There are several dates that I’m fearing – Helen’s birthday, Mother’s Day – but none more so than 14 February, which just reminds me of our last poignant Valentine’s Day together watching Brief Encounter

Griefbergs ahead! Surveying the usually calm waters of my desk diary, I see difficult days poking through the weeks ahead. Emotional pinnacles whose hidden pathos may rip holes in the side of the good ship Golightly’s recent positivity.
Unlike the Titanic’s hapless lookouts whose binoculars were locked in a cabinet the key of which was left in port , I can see at a distance grief’s peaks and so plan around them; particularly the two days whose sharp edges I fear most.

Valentine's Day is around the corner, which means it's everyone's least favorite time of the year: reminiscing on V-Days past.
With memories of former flames making their annual resurgence, it is essential to remember one thing: do. not. text. your. exes.
Don't text these people. It isn't good for you, it isn't good for them and it definitely isn't good for the new person in your life wondering why you're texting "Sal from camp."
We get it, the temptation is real — but really, it's almost definitely not going to be worth it.

Nothing says romance in a glass better than pink bubbles. Here are three pretty bottles of fizz to get you in the mood for love
Domaine Badoz Crémant du Jura Rosé Brut, France NV (£19.90, The Sampler ) I’ve never drunk pink champagne on Valentine’s Day, but judging by the various promotions on the stuff in the shops, quite a few people do, and there are worse ways of spending Tuesday evening than sharing a bottle of one the classics of the genre: the graceful Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut NV (down to £43.99 from £58.99, Waitrose ) or the gossamer, soft, red-berry prettiness of Billecart-Salmon Rosé NV (from £60, Laithwaites ). Marks & Sparks ’ raspberry-scented pink house fizz, Oudinot Rosé NV, is also good value on its offer price of £24 (reduced from £28), although my own French choice would take me away from the Champagne region to Badoz’s floral, gently tangy, racy Jura rosé.
Jansz Tasmania Premium Rosé, Australia NV (£17.50, Oddbins ) Good pink bubbles are now created all over the world, and Australia’s equivalent to the Champagne region is cool, green Tasmania, home of Jansz, a deliciously strawberry and cream rosé blend from the three traditional champagne grapes (pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier). Chile has been slower to master bubbles, but I like the crisp, snappy Santa Digna Estelado Rosé NV (£9.95, Amps ) made by Spanish producer Torres from the fashionable local país grape variety. Kent’s Hush Heath Estate is perhaps England’s best practitioner of the sparkling rosé arts, with wines such as the citrus, redcurrant and hedgerow-scented Balfour 1503 Rosé Brut NV (from £19.99, Majestic ).

Anyone else still playing Pokémon Go? Admittedly, we’re a dying breed. It seems like most players have dropped off, either because they got tired of catching Rattatas, or because playing Pokémon Go in the middle of winter is misery defined. To the credit of Niantic, they know how to look after the few that remain. In recent months, they’ve introduced promotions around major holidays and events, which have had the effect of adding a bit of variety to a game that gets a bit mundane. Read on GameSpot | Share | Tweet

Destiny 's Crimson Days event, themed around Valentine's Day , is not coming back this year. Developer Bungie announced this today in its latest weekly blog post .
"Crimson Days will not be making a return this year. We enjoyed adding some gunfire to your date night, but we have other plans," Bungie said. "Instead, we're dedicating our efforts to delivering different things for you to play."
The developer teased that the Bungie "Live" team, which creates events like Crimson Days, will reveal its next update somewhat soon. "We're super excited to tell you about it--but not so excited that we'll jump the gun," Bungie said.
Bungie added that this update, whatever it is, will come out during "springtime."
"It's rarely our policy to issue guarantees about things that are not yet certified for download. Given the work that is being done behind the scenes, however, we feel like we can start to call the shot," Bungie said.
The developer also confirmed in its weekly blog post that the next Destiny update will include some weapon balance changes. "The exact release date is to-be-determined. The full notes on fixes and changes are to-be-revealed," Bungie said.
You can read the full Bungie weekly blog post here .
2017 is poised to be a big year for Destiny. As announced previously, Bungie plans to launch Destiny 2 during the year , though the game has yet to be formally unveiled.

Pokémon Go makes $2,412 in a minute. In an hour, the popular mobile game from Niantic Labs makes $144,700. And during that time, 252 people download it.
That’s the real-time calculation from Declutter.com , which repurposed data from market researcher Think Gaming for its motion graphic . But while Pokémon Go earned more in a minute, others made more money during the full year, according to data from App Annie . Overall, the mobile game market generated an estimated $36 billion in revenue in 2016, and Pokémon Go broke records as the fastest-growing mobile game of all time.
On a per minute basis, Game of War is not far behind, at $2,167.83 per minute. And although the 2013 game did not build its revenue at the same rate as Pokémon Go, MZ’s strategy flagship shows the longevity of its popularity by standing in the No. 2 spot.
Not far behind is Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga, in third and fourth spots respectively. Clash of Clans, released in 2012, earns $1,847.31 per minute compared to Candy Crush Saga, also released in 2012, which earns $1,847.01 a minute.

A new Pokemon Go update arrived today and it has one notable change.
The official patch notes, posted on developer Niantic's website , explain that the update changes "distance-tracking to better account for GPS drift." That's the term for when your character shifts location due to the GPS service on your phone not always working as well as it should.
As Forbes explains , small shifts can have a big affect on Pokemon Go, as egg-hatching and other features are tracked using GPS. In essence, the game can think you're moving around, and reward you for it, when you really are not. Today's update apparently nerfs that.
The new Pokemon Go update also includes "minor text fixes" and introduces Apple Watch functionality that displays the eggs you obtain from PokeStops.
Here are the patch notes for Pokemon Go's January 17 update, which is 0.53.1 for Android and 1.23.1 for iOS:

Pokémon Go generated an estimated $950 million in revenues in 2016, according to a report by market researcher App Annie.
Niantic Labs launched Pokémon Go on July 6, 2016, and it became a smash hit. Within a couple of months, Niantic announced that it had been downloaded more than 500 million times.
The game got people off the couch and prompted them to walk around outside in search of Pokémon creatures. It flooded parks and other landmarks with players, and some of them made in-app purchases of items such as Pokémon balls so that they could keep on playing.
In a fireside chat the Kids@Play Summit at CES 2017, Niantic’s Archit Bhargava, global lead for marketing, told me that players had collectively walked 8.7 billion kilometers playing the game. (I have walked 100 kilometers myself).

App Annie previously reported that Pokémon Go hit $600 million faster than any other game, in a little less than 90 days. Pokémon Go hit the threshold in 90 days. By comparison, it took Candy Crush Saga more than 200 days to hit $600 million. Puzzle & Dragons took more than 400 days, and Clash of Clans took more than 500 days.
“By attracting millions of non-gamers, it reached a level of success that eludes even some of the most successful traditional video games,” App Annie said in its newest report on 2016 revenues. “This was thanks to the game’s beloved intellectual property, simple mechanics, real-world augmented reality gameplay, and perhaps most of all, its social nature.”
Contrary to publishers’ concerns, App Annie said that it did not appear to eat into other games’ revenue or usage. Since the game attracted more than just traditional mobile gamers and was often played during users’ traditionally “non-mobile” time, the game did not seem to prosper at the expense of other games, App Annie said.
Revenue hit $800 million in consumer spend in 110 days, and it hit $950 million by the end of 2016. Pokemon Go was No. 1 in downloads on iOS and Google Play in 2016, and it was No. 3 in revenue, behind No. 1 Monster Strike and No. 2 Clash Royale.
“This was far faster than some of the most successful mobile games of all time. To put Pokémon Go’s success in a broader perspective, its global consumer spend in 2016 exceeded the total worldwide box office gross of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice,” App Annie said.
