McDonald's says Twitter account was hacked before calling Trump 'disgusting' with 'tiny hands'
Donald Trump for President
A derogatory tweet about President Donald Trump sent from McDonald's account on Thursday was the work of hackers, the company said.
The tweet, sent at 9:16 a.m. ET, said: "@realDonaldTrump You are actually a disgusting excuse of a President and we would love to have @BarackObama back, also you have tiny hands."
The message was retweeted more than 600 times before being deleted 25 minutes later. The account had "pinned" the tweet about Trump, meaning it was featured at the top of the brand's Twitter page.
McDonald's first said it had been notified by Twitter that its account had been compromised, without explaining. Late Thursday, the company said "it was hacked by an external source."
Twitter
The company's account appeared to be sending on-brand messages in the minutes before and after the tweet about Trump.

McDonald's doesn't typically weigh in on politics, though its head of communications is Robert Gibbs, the former White House press secretary and senior campaign adviser to President Barack Obama.
Trump is a known fan of McDonald's food and once starred in a McDonald's commercial.

McDonald’s confirms on Twitter that Trump has tiny hands

The McDonald’s corporate Twitter feed is a sleepy affair. It’s used mostly to communicate menu changes, and to answer people’s gripes about their meals, or how they desperately want the McRib to come back (it’s not, by the way. Get over it). But today, it changed tone a little, as you can see above. It’s not clear who sent the tweet (which was hastily deleted after nearly twenty minutes of being visible). While it’s possible that it was sent by a staffer who mixed up the McDonalds twitter feed with their own, I’m inclined to think that they were hacked,…

Donald Trump may have 27.6 million Twitter followers, but more than a quarter of them are fake accounts, trolls, and novice users.
That's according to a new piece out from Bloomberg's Polly Mosendz , which took a deep dive into Trump's Twitter following. What Mosendz found was that Trump's Twitter following is largely made up of eggs: users who never changed their profile picture to a more personalized image and were stuck with Twitter's previous default image, an egg.
Using data from Social Rank, a startup that helps brands and celebrities analyze their Twitter followers, Bloomberg reports that more than 7.5 million of Trump's followers are eggs, which equates to about 28% of his total following.
Egg accounts have long been associated with bad behavior on Twitter. While they're not necessarily always trolls or automated bots, egg accounts often get a bad reputation on the site for being perpetrators of harassment and bullying. Last month, Twitter attempted to curb some of that behavior by ditching the egg for a new default image:  a silhouette of a disembodied head and shoulders, aimed at encouraging people to "upload their own photos for more personal expression."
Social Rank's CEO Alex Taub told Bloomberg that with any large Twitter following comes a large egg following. That may be because the user bought followers (which are often bots that only serve to inflate follower count), or because they were purchased by someone targeting that user.
But Trump has long been popular with eggs. Even before the election, when Trump's following was only at 7.58 million, he still had the most egg followers of any candidate for president, according to FiveThirtyEight. In April 2016, 8% of Trump's followers were fake, compared to 7% of Hillary Clinton's, 4% of Bernie Sanders', and 3% of Ted Cruz's.

432 d ago Business Insider :: Only 1 in 5 of Trump's Twitter followers are women
Read on Business Insider | Share | Tweet

Thomson Reuters
Women make up just 19% of President Donald Trump's 27.6 million Twitter followers, according to a Bloomberg analysis of his social media account. That's fewer than one in five followers.
Using data accumulated by Social Rank, Bloomberg's article indicated that out of Trump's 20 most engaged followers, just two were women, "and both of those accounts appear to be automated."
The data also found that over 25% of Trump's Twitter followers are so-called "eggs," dubbed for the default avatar these accounts use. Typically, accounts with the egg avatar belong to novice users, fake accounts, or trolls.
Moreover, the Twitter account that engages the most with Trump's tweets, @Trump2016_Fan , has apparently tweeted more than 18,000 times in the last year, sending "mostly all-caps messages of support for the 45th president." That account also seems to be automated, according to Bloomberg.
The president is famous for his prolific social media use, particularly on Twitter, where he has posted nearly 35,000 tweets since joining the platform in 2009. His tweets have drawn both praise from his followers and censure from critics for their brash language and pointed criticism  of individuals and groups that Trump dislikes.
Of the 43 accounts that Trump follows , 15 are entities like news organizations or Trump brands, 16 are men, and 12 are women. Most of the people he follows are family members.
In contrast to the relatively low number of Trump's female Twitter followers, he garnered votes from 42% of female voters in the 2016 election, just two points behind the 44% that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney won in 2012.

Read on The Verge | Share | Tweet

Twitter has launched a lawsuit against the Trump administration, after the Department of Homeland Security sought to unmask an anonymous user of an anti-Trump account.
According to Twitter’s suit , filed today in Northern California District Court, US Customs and Border Protection has attempted to use a “limited-purpose investigatory tool” to unmask the owner of the Twitter account “@ALT_uscis.” The account, one of several “alt” or “rogue” government accounts that appeared in the wake of Trump’s ascent to the presidency, was used “to express public criticism of the Department and the current Administration,” according to Twitter’s complaint.
In the suit, Twitter writes that @ALT_uscis has purported to be a dissenting member of US...

437 d ago Re/code :: Twitter is suing the government for trying to unmask an anti-Trump account
Read on Re/code | Share | Tweet

The lawsuit filed Thursday contends the government is threatening free speech.
Twitter is suing the Trump administration after it tried to compel the social media site to reveal the identity of an account that had been tweeting criticism of the president.
In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California, Twitter revealed that the Department of Homeland Security in March had demanded that the company reveal who is behind @ALT_USCIS , an anonymous account that has been raising alarms about U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and Trump’s immigration policies.
Twitter contends the request amounts to an “unlawful” use of the government’s investigative powers, as the rules that allow customs and border officials to issue summonses generally relate to the import of merchandise, including counterfeit goods — not information involving online accounts.
In seeking to unmask that user anyway, though, Twitter says the government’s request “would have a grave chilling effect on the speech of that account in particular and on the many other ‘alternative agency’ accounts that have been created to voice dissent to government policies.”
A spokesman for DHS declined to comment, citing the fact it is pending litigation. Spokespeople for the Justice Department and White House also declined to offer their views on the case.
But Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, an ally of Silicon Valley in Congress, blasted the Trump administration Thursday for its conduct. “The Department of Homeland Security appears to have abused its authority and wasted taxpayer resources, all to uncover an anonymous critic on Twitter,” the Oregon lawmaker told Recode in a statement. He said the agency’s inspector general -- a watchdog that reviews for abuse — should “investigate to determine who directed this witch hunt.”
Since Trump has taken office, a number of “alt-agency” accounts — unofficial deviations from federal agencies’ verified online Twitter profiles — have started firing 140-character salvos at the new administration.
There are accounts for the Environmental Protection Agency and the Labor Department , for example, which have targeted Trump for his climate and employment policies. Some “rogue” staffers at the National Park Service even hijacked their official account to tweet criticism of the president around his inauguration, though NPS quickly reclaimed it.
In many cases, though, the authors of these accounts are not clear. “The users appear to view and depend on preservation of their anonymity as crucial to their ability to express information and ideas that are contrary to the policies and objectives of the Administration and its agencies,” as Twitter explains in its court briefing.
The @ALT_USCIS account arrived in late January, according to Twitter’s complaint, purporting to be the site of the “[o]fficial inside resistance” of USCIS. It began tweeting sharp rebukes of Trump’s immigration policies, including his support for a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border. And it soon alleged rampant mismanagement at the USCIS, pointing out a potential instance of lost green cards and poor behavior by customs agents.
On March 14, Twitter said an agent for the USCIS “transmitted to Twitter by fax a summons” that ordered it to produce records related to the alt-agency account. That information included names, addresses and phone numbers, Twitter said, along with a threat of additional sanctions if the company did not comply.
In the days to follow, Twitter said it informed the @ALT_USCIS accountholder of the government’s request — and the Trump administration of its plans to challenge the summons in court.
And on Thursday, the @ALT_USCIS also fired back:
pic.twitter.com/jMyK38iOcN
— ALT Immigration (@ALT_uscis) April 6, 2017
Twitter has a long history of defending free speech on its platform , sometimes to a fault (hence its issues around abuse and harassment). Late last year, Twitter reminded everyone that it’s against the company’s guidelines to use Twitter for surveillance purposes, claiming a “commitment to social justice is core to our mission.”

439 d ago HackadayHow to Find a Twitter Account
Read on Hackaday | Share | Tweet

[Ashley Feinberg] is not one to say no to a challenge. When James Comey (the current Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the United States of America) let slip that he has a secret Twitter and Instagram account, [Ashley] knew what she had to do.
At the beginning, [Ashley] knew only a few things: (1) Comey had recently joined twitter and (2) he only allows his “immediate relatives and one daughter’s serious boyfriend” to follow him. As such, [Ashely] deduced that “if we can find the Instagram accounts belonging to James Comey’s family, we can also find James Comey.”
To start, [Ashley] found the Instagram account of Comey’s 22-year-old son, a basketball star at Kenyon College. Not phased by Brien’s locked down Instagram account, [Ashley] requested access to Brien’s account in order to access the “Suggested for You” selections that are algorithmically generated from Brien Comey’s account. Sifting through the provided accounts [Ashley] found one that fit Comey’s profile: locked down with few friends. That account was named reinholdniebuhr. Not sure it was, in fact, James Comey, [Ashley] found Comey’s senior thesis on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr and televangelist Jerry Falwell as verification.
With Comey’s Instagram found, [Ashley] moved back to Twitter ( something y’all can’t seem to get enough of ). With only seven accounts on Twitter using some variation of “Reinhold Niebuhr” as a user name, [Ashley] was quickly able to narrow it down to one account (@projectexile7) via profiling, sealing the deal on an awesome hack filled quest. Can’t get enough of social media? Don’t worry, you never have to be disconnected.

Read on Digiday | Share | Tweet

For a split second on Thursday morning, McDonald’s seemed to be taking a swipe at President Donald Trump.
The brand’s corporate Twitter account @McDonaldsCorp (separate from its main account @McDonalds) tweeted Thursday at President Trump, saying he was a “disgusting excuse of a President.” The tweet, which was taken down shortly thereafter, also said that it would love to have Barack Obama back and that Trump had tiny hands. It was even pinned to the top of the page, before it was deleted approximately 20 minutes later.
The brand clarified that Twitter had notified it that the account had been “compromised,” adding that it was working on investigating the incident.
Twitter notified us that our account was compromised. We deleted the tweet, secured our account and are now investigating this.
— McDonald’s (@McDonaldsCorp) March 16, 2017
Either way, the rogue tweet caused quite the stir online, with McDonald’s’ Twitter mentions erupting by around 154 percent in hour-over-hour mentions, according to data crunched by Brandwatch. The hour-over-hour mentions exceeded more than 8,600 mentions between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET.
The hour-over-hour peak in tweets.
What’s more, most people seemed to be, ahem, lovin’ it, with 62.7 percent of the tweets being positive.
Positive versus negative sentiment
The positive tweets applauded the deleted tweet’s message, and celebrated the fact that people managed to screenshot the tweet. Even the Big Mac, the brand’s most recognizable burger, got a lift, with tweets by people saying that they are buying a Big Mac today to mark the occasion. According to Brandwatch, there are hundreds of tweets mentioning “Big Mac” already, and counting.
However, negative sentiment against the brand is also beginning to accrue fast, with Trump supporters expressing anger at the fast-food chain about the tweet. Even conspiracy theories are beginning to run wild, with some tweets pointing out that Robert Gibbs, McDonald’s’ chief communications officer, is a former Obama White House Press Secretary.
Expect the outrage to die down soon enough, said Kellan Terry, senior analyst at Brandwatch, especially since the brand was quick to do damage control.
“We’ve seen social outrage against brands a lot since the election in November, and it always follows the same formula” he said. “Inundation of social mentions immediately following a statement or tweet, and then the brand’s social conversation returns to normal in several days.”
Suffice it to say, someone will be losing their job at the house that Ronald built today. Meanwhile, Twitter continues to have a field day.
