'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn has made up his mind about 'Vol. 3'
Your favorite bunch of a-holes will return, and so will their faithful captain.
Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 writer and director James Gunn has confirmed he'll be back to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which has not yet announced a release date.
SEE ALSO: A chat with Kurt Russell, aka Ego the Living Planet in 'Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2'
Gunn dropped the announcement on his Facebook page , explaining that he'd only come to the decision after a lot of thought. "I needed to know it was, in my heart, what I truly felt called to do," he wrote. "I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didn’t want to start now." Read more...

Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Brings Back James Gunn As Director/Writer
Despite rumors to the contrary , James Gunn will both write and direct a third movie in the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Gunn confirmed the news on his Facebook page , dispelling rumors that he would not return in the same capacity for a third movie he had already confirmed . As he prepares to begin promoting the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn said he knows the question he'll receive most is about whether he'll direct the sequel.
"Before I was able to honestly answer this, I needed to know it was, in my heart, what I truly felt called to do," Gunn wrote. "There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didn't want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn't exist. I couldn't do it for the money, and I couldn't do it because it was what other people wanted me to do. I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do. I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didn't want to start now.
"So, after many months of ruminations and discussions, I know the answer. I could save this answer for the first, random interviewer to ask me during the press junket but instead I thought I'd share it with the most important people in the Guardiansverse--you, the fans, who have been so incredibly supportive and enthusiastic over the past five years, it has moved me to tears on a regular basis.
"So, yes, I'm returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," he said, noting how much he loves the characters. He added that he believes "they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect."
Gunn also spoke about how much he's enjoyed working with Marvel and highlighted what purpose Vol. 3's story will serve.
"Much of what's happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers' Infinity War," he explained. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far."
Before Gunn gets to work on Vol. 3, we'll first see Vol. 2 released on May 5; you can check out a trailer for that here . Before that, Telltale will release the first episode of its upcoming adventure game series tomorrow, April 18 .

Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy Is Not an Origin Story
Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is releasing within weeks of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming to theaters. But both Marvel Games and Telltale are aiming to tell an unconnected, original story with Star-Lord and the gang.
"One of the cool things is we don't want to tell an origin story again, try to retell what the
movie did," Telltale Executive Producer Justin Lambros said.
"But we did want to tell the history of these characters...we found some really interesting things the more we played and looked at their history," Lambros continued, noting they found some "potentially surprising" elements to incorporate as the studio delves into Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot's pasts .

Spoiler alert: Major spoilers follow for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
In a lot of ways, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 feels like familiar territory. We're back with the same old a-holes we met in the first film, listening to more classic rock tunes while they save the galaxy a second time.
But Vol. 2 differs from every other Marvel Cinematic Universe in one major way – and in doing so, raises the emotional stakes of the franchise as a whole.

177 d ago The VergeGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 review: sophomore slump
Read on The Verge | Share | Tweet

When the original Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters three years ago, I was skeptical. A director as idiosyncratic as James Gunn seemed a strange fit for Marvel at the time, and taking a largely Earth-tethered superhero universe all the way into outer space seemed like a risky proposition. I remember telling a friend that it felt like like a make-or-break moment: Marvel was either going to prove it could expand beyond the well-known heroes that had come before, paving the way for subsequent phases of its cinematic universe, or Guardians of the Galaxy would fall flat.
By the time Chris Pratt finished dancing through Guardians’ opening credits, I was in love, and the first installment turned out to be one of my favorite films the studio...

177 d ago The Guardian :: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 review – funny sequel suffers from pinballing pointlessness
Read on The Guardian | Share | Tweet

The Marvel superhero gang are back together – including Vin Diesel’s Baby Groot alongside Chris Pratt’s Quill – and while there’s plenty of comedy, it doesn’t really go anywhere
Marvel’s likeable superhero comedy Guardians of the Galaxy is back for amiable and goofy volume number two, and its beefy-yet-quirky space hero and team leader Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, duly has a second volume of that Awesome Mixtape on the Sony Walkman he has on him at all times.
It’s the same combination of cartoony action and intergalactic screwball with some ambient production design recalling the photorealist sci-fi imagery of Roger Dean or Chris Foss in a bygone age, creating a visual sense of earnestness to offset the archly retro pop culture gags. Again, it has its own supercharged Heart FM playlist of 70s and 80s music. The early 70s track Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass is laid on the soundtrack almost ecstatically in the opening sequence, and some tongue-in-cheek dialogue later invokes it as the greatest piece of music ever to have emerged from Planet Earth. This film rattles along and there’s a lot to enjoy, but there’s a weird air of pointlessness, almost plotlessness to this sequel.

176 d ago GameSpot :: Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Review Roundup
Read on GameSpot | Share | Tweet

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5 (April 28 in the UK; May 23 in Australia), a little under three years since the first movie pleased cinemagoers with its fresh sense of weirdness and irreverent humor.
But what about the sequel? Does Vol. 2 continue the original's good form or is it a difficult second album for writer/director James Gunn and co.?
In GameSpot's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 review , critic Randolph Ramsay said the film feels too familiar at first, but it soon "becomes thrilling, emotional, and funny." You can take a look at what a selection of what other reviewers thought in our review roundup below, or check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a wider view on critical opinion.
Beware: Minor spoilers lie below, so look away now if you want to go in totally fresh.
GameSpot -- No score
"For a brief moment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 felt like the worst thing a movie featuring a sentient baby tree and an anthropomorphic raccoon could be: it felt familiar."
"But then, just as a certain new character's Mork & Mindy-like egg-shaped ship takes off to the sound of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain," Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 starts bringing it all together. It leaves the references to the first film behind, pushing its characters, setting, and plot to compelling places. It becomes thrilling, emotional, funny, and most of all, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 finally becomes what the first film was: fun and more than a little heartfelt. As Rocket Racoon says near the film's climax: "Welcome to the freakin' Guardians of the Galaxy." It's about time." -- Randolph Ramsay [ Full review ]
The Guardian -- 3/5
"There are, once again, some funny lines, very often given to Drax, who has a way of oversharing. Pom Clementieff is very entertaining in the role of Mantis, a helpmeet of Ego; she has the gift of being an empath, someone who can intuit how someone else is feeling by laying hands on them, but is in every other fantastically naive and un-insightful about the way human beings behave.
"Ego himself introduces some apparently huge Freudian issues to the film, which on paper would seem to take the film's emotional impact up a notch or two. But they are dealt with insouciantly, even flippantly--far more so than in something like Star Wars or Superman. That's in keeping of course, with the distinctive comic flavour of this franchise, but the revelations about Quill's background just zing and ping around with the same pinball-velocity as everything else in the film. It's fun, though GOTG2 doesn't have the same sense of weird urgency and point that the first film had. They're still guarding, although the galaxy never seems in much danger." -- Peter Bradshaw [ Full review ]
Empire -- 4/5
"Even when the pixels threaten to overwhelm, Gunn finds refuge in his main characters. There's plenty to enjoy here, whether it's the perfectly deployed Baby Groot moments, or a general strain of anarchic weirdness that runs all the way through the credits and which still feels unique to this franchise, not just within the MCU, but blockbusters in general. It's easy to overlook the odd off note when a mix is this awesome." -- Chris Hewitt [ Full review ]
The Hollywood Reporter -- No score
"The heavy, elaborate action is both plentiful and rote; in their geometric design and execution, the special effects feel exceedingly computer-generated. Unlike, say, the best space battles in the Star Wars series, the frantic ballistic parrying here often makes the viewer feel as if trapped inside a pinball machine. The attitude toward all the violence and mayhem is mostly good-humored, casual and tossed-off, which provokes a few good laughs and chuckles, and writer-director Gunn gets away with a lot of lame stuff simply by moving on quickly to the next gag or explosion. As before, his bluffly cynical, good-times attitude supplies a devil-may-care feel to the proceedings that's quite appealing to audiences. But Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 plays like a second ride on a roller-coaster that was a real kick the first time around but feels very been-there/done-that now." -- Todd McCarthy [ Full review ]
Variety -- No score
"The gods of sci-fi spectacle must, of course, be served, and the climax of Vol. 2 is exorbitant, rousing, touching, and just obligatory enough to be too much of a good thing. (That isn't even counting the half-dozen post-credit teaser scenes, which make the film feel like…TV.)"
"The difference between the first Guardians and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is that the new movie is flush with what a big deal it is. Ironically, that makes it a smaller deal." -- Owen Glieberman [ Full review ]

182 d ago The Verge :: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will have at least four post-credit scenes
Read on The Verge | Share | Tweet

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 screened for press last night, and critics are already excited by Marvel’s latest outing. However, the biggest piece of news to come out of the screening is that the film has a whopping four post-credit scenes attached to it. What’s more, director James Gunn has even said that there’s a fifth to look forward to.
The fact that there’s four post-credit scenes is unheard of on its own. Films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had at most two since 2012’s The Avengers. According to ScreenRant, two of the scenes tease future events, which is already exciting. A fifth scene didn’t play for critics, but Gunn is already setting new expectations:
@screenrant Well, five, actually.
